Well Safety

The Water Quality Association (WQA) recommends well owners consider disinfecting their wells if affected by severe flooding. Wells and plumbing systems should always be disinfected if the well or pump room has flooded.

It is also possible that bacteria and other organisms may be introduced into a well or plumbing system when repair or maintenance occurs. Wells and plumbing systems should always be disinfected following new construction or repair.

The WQA Modular Education Program trains all certified professionals on disinfection methods, and all members have access to the steps of well disinfection in the WQA Knowledge Base. Residents can contact a local water treatment professional for information and help on disinfecting wells or water treatment systems. Visit WQA’s website for a searchable database:  http://www.wqa.org/find-providers or Texas WQA at: https://twqa.org/.
