LSU Hospital Closings

The head of the LSU System says he's talking to private hospital leaders about ways to partner and keep the university-run hospitals open despite ongoing budget woes.  William Jenkins says LSU will need to bring in private health care facilities to operate some of the public hospitals.  Otherwise, some will be closed due to budget cuts.  Because many of the hospitals care for uninsured patients, attracting partnerships will be difficult.  Budget woes also are affecting the state's Medicaid program.  Louisiana's health agency must save $56 million on drugs for Medicaid patients to help balance the state budget. But there's still no plan.  The changes will take effect October 1, but the emergency rules are due next month. State health leaders say further delays will only hurt the agency's ability to meet budget demands. And there are concerns about a lack of transparency in the process. Some lawmakers claim the fast changes could be detrimental to the patients.
