FROM THE CITY OF NACOGDOCHES OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

As we all know, Hurricane (now tropical storm) Harvey has caused severe damages in the lower Texas coast area and is currently causing extreme flooding in the Houston Area.  Officials with Nacogdoches Emergency Management have been, since Friday morning, in regular contact with regional and state emergency management officials. As of 6:00 pm Sunday, August 27, this is the situation in Nacogdoches:

Currently no shelters have been opened in Nacogdoches. We are following the request of state emergency operations officials. Shelters are opened on a pre-determined state plan to better insure the safety of those evacuating as well as taking into consideration possible local needs. If we are notified to open shelters, they will be opened quickly, and information will be disseminated at that time.

Gasoline is currently available in Nacogdoches. A check with distributors this morning indicates no supply problems.

A check of our two creeks in the city at 5:15 p.m. today showed them flowing almost normally and well within their banks. The ground is currently saturated, and more light rain is forecast. Persons in low lying areas should be mindful of the possibility of rising water within the next 24 hours, but that is not forecast by the weather service at this time.

FORECAST: The National Weather Service has indicated our area could receive an additional 3” to 6” of rain between this afternoon and Wednesday. Nacogdoches County is right on the breaking line (see posted graphic). This should be in the form of showers.

We will issue an update tomorrow or earlier if the situation changes.
