Jason Balkcom, President of the Rotary Club of Center, revealed the winner of the 2017 What-A-Melon Festival logo contest to be Kayarra Emerson, an 11th grader at Center High School, at the club's May 16th meeting.

The Rotary Club enlisted the assistance of Center ISD teacher, Adam Ramirez to help design the official logo of the 2017 What-A-Melon Festival. Ramirez teaches graphic design and illustration and was recently named Shelby County Secondary Teacher of the Year.

With only a one week time frame, he challenged his students to design the festival logo. Eight students rose to the challenge and submitted their unique design with each submitted entry meeting guidelines set by the Rotary Club.

With six of the students who submitted artwork attending the Rotary Club's meeting for the reveal, Balkcom opened the envelope displaying the winning design. None of the club members knew who the artist for each entry was when the selection was made making it a surprise as to who the artist was.

The winning artwork will be on the festival t-shirts, buttons, and other promotional materials. Emerson was also presented a check for $100.

The Rotary Club would like to thank all the students who participated and Mr. Ramirez for doing such a great job teaching his students a valuable skill which they can use in many different future careers.
