Severe thunderstorms attacked the area late Saturday afternoon

Severe thunderstorms attacked the area late Saturday afternoon and evening causing storm damage to a large portion of Shelby, San Augustine, Sabine and Nacogdoches Counties, in addition to DeSoto Parish. The National Weather Service detected several lines of severe thunderstorms that produced quarter-size or larger hail, damaging winds in excess of 60 mph, dangerous cloud to ground lightning, and heavy down pours of rain. The weather service issued several severe thunderstorm warnings starting before 6 p.m. and continuing until 8:30 p.m. as the storms moved south out of the area.  In Center, there were several trees and tree limbs reported in roadways and downed at residence. Same goes out in Shelby County, as several trees were reported blocking secondary roadways such as FM 138. Another weather related incident was the interruption to electrical service area wide. According to AEP SWEPCO and Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative:  The National Weather Service says Saturday’s severe thunderstorms can be attributed to combinations of daytime heating, disturbances aloft and a moist and unstable atmosphere. Saturday’s daytime high temperatures before the storms rose well above forecast highs, as they topped out into the triple digits.  According to Jim Forbes, Saturday's 100 degree day was the first day in July to reach triple digits.  Rainfall for Saturday was 1.04 inches. Thunderstorm activity Sunday was sparse and not as intense.
