San Augustine Upcoming events

The *San Augustine Lion's Club* is sponsoring a *Holiday Food Drive*
through the end of 2016.  Container boxes have been placed in participating
businesses for those who would like to *drop off non-perishable grocery
items* to help the Club help those in need in our community.  Thus far,
boxes are in Bogard's Emporium, City Hall (just inside the north door),
Haley's Furniture, Mills Hardware, State Insurance, Texas Star Retail and
Yesterday's Treasures.  So, when you are patronizing one of these fine
local businesses, it will be very easy to supply grocery items for the
needy.  Boxes will be going into some Broaddus businesses shortly, so stay
tuned, southerners!

Remember to mark your calendars for the *Chamber Blood Drive at the Log
Cabin on Friday, December 23rd*, *from 11:30 to 3:30 pm*.  We can handle
two donors every fifteen minutes, and if we can fill our slate with donors,
they will be able to stay longer, so "RSVP" to save a life, and let us know
if you would like to come later than mid-afternoon.  Besides juice,
cookies, and gratitude, there will be special hoodies for our donors, and
boy, are they nice ones!  All sizes, too.
Please consider 'liking' and sharing our Blood Drive event on your
personal facebook page to be sure this event is a success -
https://www.facebook.com/events/386601485012862/.  Call the Chamber to
reserve a time at (936) 275-3610.

If you’ve been meaning to donate to one of the local children’s funds, it’s
not too late to do so, and they would be incredibly grateful, as all of the
organizations are finding that donations are way down this year.  Giving
options include the *Care and Share Children’s Christmas Fund*, the *Broaddus
Children’s Christmas Fund*, and *CASA’s program*.

We are so pleased to welcome Phillip Reynolds, DDS to town, with *San
Augustine Smiles and Fast Braces officially open for business on the squa*re.
His friendly office staff will be glad to set you up to get those pearlies
cleaned up and straightened out.  Thanks for choosing San Augustine, Dr.
Reynolds! [image: Inline image 1]

Mission Dolores hosted their first *Lunch and Learn* last Friday, where
interpreter Brooke Bonorden filled us in on Glass Bottles, with lots of
clues as to how to identify when a found bottle was made and what it might
have been used for.  We got “hands on” with bottles from their collection
as found on Mission Hill, some hand blown and others with evidence of the
casting techniques, style, shape, and color hinting at their history.
Brooke’s easy style and enthusiasm for the subject made this lots of fun,
and we are really looking forward to next month’s program on *Father Margil
*on *Friday, Jan 13th at noon*.  Before that happens, check out the *Posada
*and evening of holiday festivities on* Wednesday, December 21 st at **7:30
pm.  *Posadas are a longstanding tradition brought to Mexico, and
ultimately Texas, from Spain in the 1500s by Catholic Missionaries.
Posadas commemorate the Biblical story of Mary and Joseph's journey from
Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a place for Jesus to be born. The Posada
will include traditional Catholic hymns, light refreshments, and a piñata.
This event is open to the community and there is no admission fee. Mission
Dolores State Historic Site is currently open Tuesday through Sunday, 8
a.m.–5 p.m., but will be open after the Posada for anyone who would like to
tour the museum. For more information, call (936) 275-3815.

On *Saturday, January 7 *the Main Street *Junk in the Trunk Trade Days *will
be held in downtown San Augustine around the courthouse square. The Main
Street Program is seeking vendors and shoppers to participate. Get a jump
star on Spring Cleaning, and offer up those Christmas gifts that didn't
quite suit you!  Call 936-201- 9798 or 936-275- 3172 for more information.

[image: Inline image 4]Ready to get started on those New Year's Resolutions

be better, we'll *begin registering* participants on *January 2nd*, which
will be the first date available to weigh in, and the program will *kick
off on Monday, January 23rd* (also the last day to register), and go for
eight weeks until March 20th.  There will be *cash prizes*, *great speakers*,
