CHANGES AHEAD ON LUFKIN LOOP CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

LUFKIN - Motorists will notice in coming days new traffic patterns as they drive through the SL 287/US 59 construction project.

Contractors on Thursday completed work on the westbound main lanes that was narrowed to a single lane beneath the Business US 59 overpass. TxDOT opened the additional lane allowing traffic to flow in a smoother pattern.

Other changes expected in October include a traffic switch to the newly constructed eastbound main lanes. Concrete is expected to be set that will complete the eastbound main lanes by mid-October.

In addition, Webber Construction, contractors for the $58 million project, are working to complete the exit/entry ramps that will allow access to and from Business 59. The ramps will create a smooth transition to Business 59 where the outdated cloverleaf exit/entry was located. The permanent retaining wall is being completed this week and concrete is expected to be set in coming days.

Workers are also scheduled to drill foundations for columns that will support two additional overpasses that will allow traffic to exit the loop in order to make U-turns in either westbound or eastbound directions.

"This project is changing daily as it nears completion," said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer for the Lufkin District. "As these traffic patterns continue to shift, we urge motorists to observe all directional signs advising of the changes. This is a very busy project with many workers and equipment positioned in different locations. We ask drivers to slow down for their own safety as well as the safety of our workers and contract employees."

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2016, weather permitting. The completed project will allow for better maneuverability and ease of access. Motorists are reminded that all traffic fines double when workers are present in a construction zone.
