Local county clerks waiting for proper forms to issue same-sex marriage licenses

The Supreme Court declared Friday that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the United States.

Gay and lesbian couples already could marry in 36 states and the District of Columbia.

The court's 5-4 ruling means the remaining 14 states, in the South and Midwest, will have to stop enforcing their bans on same-sex marriage.

Soon after the court’s announcement, not having the proper license forms in most counties in Texas was the issue.

In Shelby County, the county clerk’s office advised me a same sex couple would need to wait until County Clerk Jennifer Fountain was back in the office Monday.

Meanwhile, San Augustine County Clerk Margo Noble said she was waiting to hear from the state’s vital statistics’ department to proceed.

Same-sex couples, just like heterosexual couples must wait 72 hours after obtaining a license before they can get married.
