Powell celebrates 15 Years at Panola College

On June 19, Panola College Board of Trustees, employees, and members of the community celebrated President Dr. Gregory S. Powell’s fifteen years as the college’s leader. At the event, Mr. William Goolsby, Chair of the Panola College Board of Trustees, presented Powell with a service award to commemorate his fifteen years. Mr. Goolsby thanked Dr. Powell for his
dedication and commitment to excellence, which has been instrumental to the continued growth of the college.

Under Powell’s executive stewardship, Panola College has seen the expansion and addition of several buildings on campus including the M.P. Baker Library, four student apartments – J.C. Phillips Hall, Buchanan Hall, Charles Hughes Hall and Bill O’Neal Hall, the Charles C. Matthews Foundation Student Center, and the Health and Natural Sciences Building.The
college has increased student enrollment from 1,400 to over 2,700 students. The college is consistently ranked among the nation’s top ten digital colleges and in 2012, 2013 and 2014 was named to the Honor Roll (one of only twelve community colleges in the United States) as a Great College to Work For by the *Chronicle of Higher Education*.

Powell earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Stephen F. Austin State University and an M.A. in Political Science from Texas State University.  He earned his Doctorate from Texas A&M – Commerce.  Texas A&M – Commerce has twice honored Dr. Powell.  In 2006, he was recognized as an Ambassador for the College of Education and in 2007 he received an award for outstanding alumnus. Stephen F. Austin State University honored Powell as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2013. In addition to his presidential
oversight of Panola College, he has also served on several regional and state college boards.
