Shelby County Commissioners agree to move forward with public official liability insurance coverage, purchase of backhoe for Pct. 3

The Shelby County Commissioners' Court has agreed to move forward with the yearly renewal application for liability coverage for public official and law enforcement through the Texas Association of Counties, as decided at Monday's meeting.

The item had been tabled a couple of weeks ago as questions arose to the coverage it provided to the district attorney and district judges and whether it had ever been used, and was it worth keeping.

County Auditor Clint Porterfield advised the court that after speaking with District Attorney Kenneth Florence, it was felt the coverage should be included as part of the renewal.

"The Cost is $580 a year with up to a $1 million in coverage. He (Florence) felt it was beneficial to leave in case needed especially with today's legal scrunity environment, according to Porterfield.

"I believe it was a very good decision by the court to leave that endorsement."

In addition Porterfield said the county has been fortunate that this particular line item insurance coverage has gone down in costs, as compared to automobile insurance. He added the county's under budget, saying the Texas Association of Counties does a good job in reviewing the criteria for making applications for insurance.

Shelby County Commissioners also approved the following items of business at Monday's meeting:

* The purchase of a rubber tire backhoe from Buyboard for Pct. 3 for just under $100,000 to be paid from the precint's Road & Bridge Fund.

* The annual data use agreement between Computer Information Concepts and Shelby County Tax Assessor for $4,680 which is budgeted.

* The bid for $595 per ton for road oil from Bryan & Bryan Asphalt of Henderson. Which is below the $615 a ton a year ago.
