Dual-language programs wanted at CISD, health advisory committee has active year

At the Center ISD Board of Trustees' meeting Tuesday night, Superintendent Dr. James Hockenberry distributed the results of House Bill 5 Community Engagement Results.

He said a diverse group of parents and faculty on each campus provided some great ideas as they considered ways to expand on H.B. 5, which is aimed at improving public school education by expanding curriculum options as they prepare for college or enter the workforce, reducing standardized testing, so teachers are forced to "teach to the test", and enhancing school accountability.

He noted a growing desire for dual-language programs at Center ISD, not only English as a second language, but Spanish to all. Hockenberry said we're at a point where all students need to know both English and Spanish. The results are forwarded to the state.

Center ISD Administrative Assistant Joyce Permenter also gave the School Health Advisory Committee Report, which she heads up, and advised trustees the group was very active in 2014-15, conducting events such as mobile mammograms, bullying education, drunk driving awareness, including "Sean Speaks" recently where over 600 high-school age students attended from Shelby County, and training of epi-pen administering, saying the pens have been added campuses.

Ms. Permenter said goals for the new school year will be focusing on parental participation, hand-washing techniques and CPR training.

The health advisory committee is required by the state.
