Local Sports Update 06/17/15; Wiggins, Clark crowned anglers of the year

The South East Texas High School Fishing circuit announced year end standings for the region at the championship pre-tournament meeting last Friday night in Brookeland and Shelby County Jr. Bass Anglers Jared Wiggins and Brett Clark of Center were crowned Anglers of the Year and received over $4,000 in scholarships, plus other monies during the season. Their fathers, Darren Wiggins and Scooter Clark were also recognized for being their Boat Captains for the year. Also recognized for finishing in the top ten in standings were the team of James Marshall and Chandler Burgay of Timpson.

 

The South East Texas Regional Championship was also held at Umphrey's Pavillion on Sam Rayburn last weekend. The two-day event brought in 266 teams of anglers from area schools that qualified to fish for the grand prize of $10,000 in scholarship monies. A total of $110,000 of scholarships and prizes were given out over the weekend to these anglers. The team of Wiggins and  Clark continued their dream season with a 6th place finish in the Championship racking up another $3000 in scholarship monies, plus prizes for capturing the second place overall big bass of the event weighing 8.24lbs!  Shelby County Jr. Bass Anglers' Lynn and Diana Stanford club advisors. Shelby Count 4-H Shooters participate in Whiz-bang

The Freestone County Whiz-bang was held at Caney Creek Lodge on Saturday, June 13th.  Shelby County 4-H shooters  had eight kids participating; Seth Shamblin, Tucker Scarber, Hagan Craig, Konner Windham, Nic Lambert, Colton Gutermuth, Lance Holloway and Logan Holloway.  The shoot had two events which included a one hundred bird sporting clays course and a fifty bird whiz-bang.  The places were decided by the total of both events. Junior Division: Seth Shamblin 5th place, Intermediate Division: Logan Holloway 4th. Congratulations to Nic Lambert and Konner Windham for winning Briley gift cards in the drawing.

 

23rd annual Darren Wilson Golf Classic set for June 20

The 23rd annual Darren Wilson Golf Classic will be held this Saturday, June 20th at the Center Country Club. The Classic will be played in a 6 person scramble format. The cost will be $80 per golfer which will include golf gift bag, lunch, greens fee and fellowship. Rental fee for carts is not included in the sign-up fee. You can sign up in the pro shop or on the window of the 19th hole. Prizes will be given for 1st and 2nd gross and handicap scores. There will also be a silent auctions held with lots of great prizes. Center Lady Rider Athletic camps set

The Center Lady Roughrider Athletic Program is hosting a Volleyball Camp on July 6th-9th from 8:00 AM-12:00 PM at the Center High School Gym. It is for Incoming 5th graders through 9th graders. The cost will be $20 for individuals or $35 for two children families. Pre-registration is from now until June 29th.

The cost will be $20 for individuals or $35 for two children families. Pre-registration is from now until July 20th.

Timpson Frontier Day Washer Board Tournament

A Washer Board tournament will be among the activities at the annual Timpson Frontier Days on Saturday, July 4. The tourney is for two-person teams, consisting of any age and gender. It’s a double-elimination style bracket and will start at 11 a.m. in downtown Timpson. Cost is $10 per team with 80 percent payout to first-place, 20 percent to second place. Pre-registration is required no later than 5 p.m. July 1. There will be NO registration allowed the day of the tournament. What-A-Melon 5K/Walk set for July 11

Center Rotary Club is gearing up for their annual What-A-Melon 5K/ Walk event which will be held on Saturday, July 11th. Each year, Center Rotary Club donates a major portion of the events funds to a local non-profit organization. This year’s funds will go towards the Shelby County Outreach Ministries. Everyone is encouraged to come out and participate in this fun family event. The event will be held at the Center Square. The fun run will begin at 7:00AM and the 5K at 7:30AM. Both events are for people of all ages. You can walk or run either event. Strollers are acceptable. T-shirts will be available for the first 150 participants. Packet pickup will be held at All Hours Fitness on Friday, July 10 from 5PM – 6:30PM and Saturday, July 11 from 6AM-6:45AM. Registrations are available at Shelby Savings Bank, All Hours Fitness and Shelby County Outreach Ministries. Registration is also available (and preferred) online at www.onestoprace.com.
