Center ISD Trustees hire new elementary principal, receive facilities' renovation update

Center Elementary School has a new principal as Shelly Norvell was named to the position at last night’s Center ISD Board of Trustee meeting.

Ms. Norvell has been in education 16 years, most recently serving as a principal at Kennard Elementary for a year. She said 15 years were in the Nacogdoches ISD. She resides with her family in Nacogdoches.

Superintendent Dr. James Hockenberry presented the board with a facilities’ update on the proposed renovations of the Malone Drive campuses. Architect and engineer sketches were viewed by trustees, with a tentative timeline to go out for proposals late next week.

He said bids should come in time for the July meeting, at which time the board will review and decide where and how and what work is to be done, including costs associated with the projects.

Some of the top items on the list include air condition in the middle and intermediate school gyms, bleachers and work on the middle school gym floor, which Hockenberry said was in good shape.

In addition, work in the locker rooms, tearing down some temporary walls, and making the restrooms ADA compliant.

Hockenberry added scoreboards for the gyms have been ordered, including a new one at Roughrider Stadium that should be up in time for football season.

Work on the field house locker room at the stadium is also included on the list of renovations.
