Flag Day is Sunday, retirement ceremonies planned today, Saturday

Sunday is Flag Day; it commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date, which is 240 years. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

There are a couple of flag retirement ceremonies occurring this weekend. Today, the Timpson Youth Advisory Council members will be conducting a flag retirement ceremony for the City of Timpson at 5:30 p.m. at SoSo Park.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Ladies Auxiliary will join local scouts in observance of Flag Day with a flag retirement ceremony at 10 a.m. at the post home, 617 Highway 96N, Tenaha Hwy. in Center.

Unusable flags that have been collected will be burned in accordance with the US Flag code.

The public is cordially invited to both events.
