Panola County woman's bond set at $500,000 for the murder of her husband, remains in jail

A Panola County woman remains behind bars this morning after she reportedly shot her husband in the back of the head following a verbal argument Tuesday night.

 

The incident occurred in the Murvaul Community on Panola County Road 121 just after 9 p.m.

 

Charged with murder is 49-year old Sarah Gilpatrick Venable. She reportedly retrieved a .380 from a bedroom and shot Jay Venable one time.

 

Ms. Venable said she and her husband had gotten into an argument earlier that day concerning her losing her job.

 

Ms. Venable is a former employee of the Center ISD, having taught on the middle school. According to Superintendent Dr. James Hockenberry, she submitted her resignation on February 24, and her last day at work was March 2.

 

Sheriff Kevin Lake said his department had responded to several disturbance calls at the residence previously.

 

An autopsy was ordered on Jay Venable.

 

Sarah Venable remains in the Panola County Detention Center, charged with murder. Bond is $500,000.

 

The case has been turned over to the Panola County Criminal District Attorney's office.
