Sweepstakes-Tenaha Band Leaves “No Doubt” at Contest

For the reader who may not be familiar with how band competition works, allow this analogy to serve as a description for how well the Tenaha Roarin’ Band from Tiger Land performed at yesterday’s 2015 Spring Concert and Sight Reading Contest at Troup High School:

When Tenaha left AT&T Stadium in December of 2011, there was no one that
questioned that Tenaha was the undisputed Champion after beating Munday 52-28.

When first year Tiger Director Brian Sours lowered his baton after the final note of the stage performance and subsequently when he did the same in the Sight Reading room, there was virtually little need to await the judges scores.

For the first time in three years, Tenaha features a “Sweepstakes” band program.  To earn Sweepstakes distinction a band must make 1st Division in Marching Contest in the fall and then also make a dual 1st Division on stage and in Sight Reading.  After switching marching styles from military to corps style, Mr. Sours led the Tigers to a 1-1-2 rating in the fall (good
enough for 1st Division).  Yesterday, the judges rated Tenaha “1-1-1” on stage, and “1-1-1” on Sight Reading.  It was the first time for Tenaha to receive perfect scores in Spring Contest since 2009.

After bringing home the coveted Sweepstakes trophy from the UIL yesterday, the Tiger Band awaits to hear the fates of their top 2A competitors today as many rivals compete this morning.  Other program scores from yesterday were Mount Enterprise 2-2-3, 2-2-2; Cushing 2-2-3, 2-2-3; and Beckville 1-2-2, 1-2-2.  Shelbyville, Timpson, Overton, and Carlisle all perform today.  By virtue of the fall marching contest, only Shelbyville and Carlisle have the opportunity to join Tenaha as a 2014-15 Sweepstakes band.
