Monday morning storms result in large number of power outages throughout DETEC system

The pre-dawn line of thunderstorms that came through Monday morning left a large number of power outages on the Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative system, especially is counties to our south.

 

According to the co-op's Brittney Johnson there were over 7,000 outages around 8 a.m. Monday. She said the hardest-hit areas included Weirgate, Horton Hill, Pineland, Broaddus and Etoile, with scattered outages in San Augustine, Shelby and Nacogdoches counties.

 

At 3 p.m. Monday, that number had jumped to 8,000 members without power, including 900 in Shelby County, some 1,200 in San Augustine County, 1,300 in Nacogdoches County and 3,000 in Sabine County.

 

However, by midnight the outage was approximately 1,000 members, including 300 in Sabine County, 260 in San Augustine and 230 in Nacogdoches County.

 

Ms. Johnson said contractors have been working non-stop alongside DETEC crews to restore power as quickly and as safely as possible. She added crews reported trees on lines and broken power poles due to the high winds.

 

The power outage was 12,000 members at its peak in Jasper County, which is served by Jasper-Newton County Electric. Most schools were closed or delayed in Jasper County Monday.

 

TxDOT crews were also busy clearing roadways Monday morning. Rhonda Oaks, public information officer said there were multiple reports of downed trees and debris in many roadways throughout the Lufkin district.

 

In San Augustine County, there were numerous trees across roadways on U.S. 96, SH 21, FM 2313, FM 95, FM 1196 and FM 2189; Nacogdoches County there were trees down on FM 343 and FM 226; Sabine County also had a number of locations with trees in the roadways. Shelby County had no reports of damage.
