CISD Athletic Facilities' Committee makes recommendations to trustees

The Center ISD Board of Trustees received a comprehensive report from the appointed Athletic Facilities’ Committee at last Thursday night’s meeting, and the 13-member group made up of board members, coaches and community members recommended what they felt were prioritized upgrades. The committee said they understood the district has limited resources and may not even be able to implement all the solutions.

At the top of the committee’s list is remodeling and renovation to the existing Center Middle School Gym, field house, and locker rooms; the Intermediate School gym; and addition of tennis courts at the high school and Malone Drive.

School board member Stephen Shires, who was also on the committee, said an increase in students has the middle school, which was the original high school, busting at the seams for room for not only sports but all extra-curricular activities, which is a good thing, but needs attention immediately. He adds we have to have the facilities for students.

Shires said the attention at the middle school was needed as soon as possible.

As for Center ISD Tennis, the elite program has made a name for its self statewide. Shires said the tennis program is constantly winning, and the committee felt it should be rewarded.

Shires says having the Athletic Facilities Committee’s report will assist in a comprehensive plan for the district. He said looking at it financially, “We have to have balance and we owe it to the students and taxpayers.”

Center ISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Hockenberry believes the findings will be beneficial in making plans for the district.

“The committee did an exceptional job identifying needs and providing
recommendations. Their work will provide us the needed information to make short and long term decisions with our athletic facilities. I sincerely appreciate the time and energy they put into the task they were assigned.”

The CISD Athletic Facilities’ Committee members are: Stephen Shires, Sharon Nelson, Daphne LaRock, Bob Reeves, Jason Locke, Terry Scull, Darrell Williams, Kelly Lucas, Tracy Bolton, Alex Cloudy, Roque Palomino, John Michael Burns and Sharon Crelia.

Below are the recommendations presented to the CISD Board of Trustees last Thursday evening.
