Safe Sitter Babysitting Certification Course for Teens to be Offered

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will offer a Safe Sitter course for young teens 10 and up on Saturday, May 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the active Shelby County Courthouse, 2nd floor meeting room.

Over 650,000 adolescent babysitters have graduated from the medically-accurate program which instills students with confidence as they learn how, why and where injuries can happen so they can be prevented.  The up-to-date curriculum provides hands-on practice in lifesaving techniques designed to prepare babysitters to act in an emergency.  Babysitters also receive instruction on how a child’s age affects how to care for them, how to prevent problem behavior and how to run their own babysitting business.  They also learn basic first aid as well as how to perform infant and child choking rescue.

To graduate from the Safe Sitter course and receive a completion card, students must pass a rigorous practical and written test that indicates their mastery of key concepts and life and safety skills.

The class is limited to 10 students and the deadline to register is May 6th.  The cost of the course is $30 and includes a student babysitter’s manual and completion card.  Snacks and drinks will be provided.  Participants will need to bring a sack lunch.  For more information or to register your son or daughter to participate, contact Shelby County Extension agent, Jheri-Lynn McSwain at 936-598-7744 or jheri-lynn.smith@ag.tamu.edu.  For more information about the Safe Sitter organization, contact National Headquarters at 800-255-4089 or visit www.safesitter.org.
