Local Sports Round up 04/21/15; Riders at home to play Henderson tonight

Soccer all-district:

The all-district soccer selections have been released and several state-semifinalist Center Roughriders have been named.  Newcomer of the Year-Raul Lara. Receiving First Team All District- Marcos Lopez, Isidro Lopez, Lorenzo Angel, and Juan Ramirez. On Second Team All-District is Raul Lara, Aung Thein, and Arnol Escobedo.

 

Two Roughrider Soccer players were selected to the All-State Tournament Team: Aung Thein and Julian Jimenez.

 

The Center Lady Rider Soccer team had its best season yet and had the All-District selections to show for it.  *1st team* Mari Cruz Gonzalez & Dulce Gonzalez; *2nd Team*Damaris Mendoza & Diana Solis.

 

Baseball

The Center Roughriders are home against Henderson to get the third and final round of Dist. 19-4A underway. Center (7-2) remains a game back of Carthage (8-1) in the Dist. 19-4A standings. JV starts at 4:30 p.m.

 

In Dist. 23-2A, Timpson takes a 12-2 win over Mt. Enterprise last night. The Bears are 8-2, and will host Gary (8-3) tonight, while Joaquin (6-4) will be at state-ranked and district front-runner Beckville (11-0). Timpson goes to Joaquin Thursday.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons finished up the Martinsville game in Gary last night, no score available. There's no word on when Shelbyville will take on Tenaha, which was scheduled last night. We do know Shelbyville will hosts Mt. Enterprise today and go to Joaquin Friday.

 

In Dist. 24-2A Monday, Broaddus sweeps a double-header from Colmesneil to improve to 13-1. West Sabine is 12-0 and Colmesneil drops to 10-3, two games ahead of Zavalla.

Garrison defeats Hemphill, 5-3 Monday to improve to 8-3 in Dist. 22-3A. The Bulldogs go to Woodville tonight.

Softball

The Center Lady Riders (0-7) will wrap-up their season at Rusk tonight.

 

The playoff bound Shelbyville Lady Dragons' game against Chireno was rescheduled from yesterday to next Monday, April 27 at 5 p.m. in Chireno. Today, Shelbyville (10-2) goes to Pineland to play West Sabine (11-2) in a 5 p.m. start. Today's game will decide second place in Dist. 22-2A.

 

The Joaquin Lady Rams have clinched third in Dist. 21-2A and will be at Gary today.

College basketball:

SFA Ladyjacks’ head coach Brandon Schneider is leaving Nacogdoches and returning to Kansas after five seasons. Schneider will be announced the women’s coach at Kansas today.  Before coming to SFA, Schneider spent 12 years as the head coach of Division II Emporia State in Emporia, Kan. where he won the 2010 Division II National Championship. At SFA, he went 95-66 and won back-to-back Southland titles the last two seasons.

 

College rodeo:

Panola College Bareback rider Wyatt Denny continued his strong push for a National title this week at the NIRA rodeo in Hillsboro with a second place finish. Wyatt has held on to the lead all year with no signs of letting it go coming into the last two weeks of regular season rodeo. Wyatt has also been competing on a professional level, and been doing very well. Panola has 3 bull riders in the top five in the region all with a great possibility of qualifying for the C.N.F.R. Gannon Ivy, Fulton Rutland, and Randy Myers. Fulton won third this weekend and Randy Myers was fourth. The great efforts of the bull riders this weekend helped the Ponies men’s team to a fourth place finish.  The rodeo team will be at its last regional rodeo April 24-25 in Wharton, Tx.

 

Car Show:

The City of San Augustine Main Street would like to invite you to enter the antique and muscle car show during the Heritage Festival on May 2. The chairs Billy Johnson and daughter Brittney Johnson are in charge of the event. It will take place Saturday May 2. Call to reserve your place, 936-201-9798 or 936-275-3172. Come out and enjoy the good food, farmers market, heritage demonstrations, information booths, arts and crafts vendors, shopping, educational presentations, storytelling, live entertainment and downtown walking tours.

 

Joaquin Athletic Boosters:

The Joaquin Athletic Booster Fundraiser $10,000 raffle will be held Monday, May 11 in conjunction with the high school athletic banquet. The tickets are $100 each for the drawing, with only 250 tickets sold. The drawing goes as follows: 1st ticket drawn-$5,000, 2nd-6th tickets-$1,000 each. A total of $10,000 will be given away. There will not be a meal included with the drawing. If you would like to attend the athletic banquet as well, tickets for the meal will be on sell at the high school office at a later date. Tickets can be purchased from any Joaquin Athletic Booster member or the administration office.

 

DU Greenwing event:

After having to postpone in March due to wet weather, the Shelby County Ducks’ Unlimited annual Green Wing event has been rescheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, June 6. According to Clint Tanner the location has been changed to a familiar site, Weldon Boles’ property off Old City Lake Road. Tanner said DU used that location previously.

There will be prizes for all kids, along with Texas Parks & Wildlife Game Wardens providing hunter safety, Mike Hudman with Black Water Retrievers with a dog demo and a free hot dog meal. All kids’ ages up to 17 are invited to attend. Mark your calendar for June 6, the Shelby County Ducks Unlimited Greenwing Event. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. The location is 245 CR 1006, Center. Take a Kid Fishing:

The 37th annual Center Broadcasting-Shelby County Bass Anglers’ Take a Kid Fishing Bream Tournament will be held on Toledo Bend at Huxley Bay Marina on Saturday, May 9. We invite all children ages 3 to 15 years old to register for the free tournament. Entry forms can be picked up at the Center Broadcasting studios at 307 San Augustine Street in Center, Huxley Bay Marina, Scarber’s Grocery & Trail’s End & RV in Huxley, First Bank and Trust East Texas in San Augustine, or Hometown Tackle in Center.   Participants must be preregistered no later than May 1st.  Trophies will be awarded to each group and prizes will be available for each participant.  Fishing begins at 6am, and all participants must be in the weigh-in line no later than 12:30pm.
