Joaquin Mayor, former long-time fireman honored with "Pink Heals" visit

There was a special event in Joaquin Monday as the Pink Heals organization, Gregg County Chapter showed up in their pink fire truck and bunker gear in honor of Mayor Mike Wood.

The long-time city and community leader and volunteer fireman who's been battling cancer, was able to be on hand for the occasion.

The mayor's daughter, Janie Jones contacted the Pink Heals president in Longview, who set up the visit. Ms. Jones said Randy Leidtke, a member of the Carthage Fire Department, who also volunteers for Pink Heals told her they would be in Joaquin for her dad.

The non-profit group doesn't take donations, and any monies received goes to cancer related health organizations. Pink Heal firemen in attendance Monday in Joaquin were from Longview, Kilgore, White Oak and Carthage.

The Pink Heals has some 14,000 volunteers nationwide that travels throughout the U.S. visiting with cancer patients.

Also on hand for the event was another long-time Joaquin volunteer fireman, Elmer Mathews, who’s also had some serious health issues.
