Local Sports Round up 03/24/15; Riders 3-0 after come-from-behind win over Carthage

Baseball:

 

The #14 state-ranked Center Roughriders rally for a 6-5 walk-off win over the #24 ranked Carthage Bulldogs last night at Roughrider Field. The Riders improve to 9-1-1, 3-0 in Dist. 19-4A, while Carthage drops to 4-7, 1-1 in district.  Jacob Mitchell got the win, as the senior threw 119 pitches in a seven-hit, complete game. At the plate Dalton Horton had two singles and a double; Caiden Rainbolt had a double, and bunt for hit; Josh Burns picked up a single and scored; Brent Clark had a double, and squeeze bunt to score; and Taylor Tomlin added a single. The Riders are idle today and will host Rusk Friday.

 

The Rider JV will play a double header Saturday vs. Carthage in Center at 1 and 3 p.m.

 

The Tenaha Tigers (0-3 dist.) are handed a 2-17 loss at the hands of state-ranked Beckville (3-0 dist.) last night.

 

The Timpson Bears are 3-0 in district after a 15-10 win over Mt Enterprise.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons pick up their first district win, (1-2 dist.) a 9-3 decision over the Martinsville Pirates (0-3).

 

In Dist. 23-2A, Gary, Beckville and Timpson are 3-0, Joaquin is 2-1, Shelbyville 1-2, and Tenaha, Mt. Enterprise and Martinsville are 0-3.

State Rankings:

 

The Center Roughriders have moved up to No. 14 in the Class 4A state rankings out Monday. Carthage drops to No. 24, Hudson is No. 12, while Spring Hill is No. 21 and Pleasant Grove remains No. 1. In 3A, Central Heights is still No. 4, Lufkin is No. 20 in Class 5A, Hallsville No. 4, and in 2A, Douglass is still No. 1, Beckville is up to No. 13, and the Broaddus Bulldogs are No. 21.

 

Softball:

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons get a 15-0 run-ruled win in three innings over Brookeland Monday. Shelbyville improves to 4-0 in district.

 

The Joaquin Lady Rams come up short to Alto, 6-8.

 

Timpson Lady Bears lose to Gary, 4-6.

Soccer:

 

The Center Rider Soccer team will play a first-round playoff game Friday night, March 27 at 5:30 p.m. against Mexia in Crockett. The Riders finished second in district.

 

Bass Fishing:

 

Two local high school bass anglers did well last Saturday competing in the Southeast Texas High School Fishing Association tournament in Orange. Center High School senior Jared Wiggins and junior Brett Clark were among 12 teams paired with Bassmaster Pro Anglers. Despite the rainy conditions, Wiggins and Clark weighed in a three fish limit of 8lbs. 11oz. earning them second place overall.

 

Basketball Honors:

 

Shelbyville Junior J.J. Boykins has been selected to the Class 2A Region III Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region team. Boykins was the unanimous Dist. 22-2A MVP and help to lead the Dragons to their first district title in 26 years.

 

Little Dribblers:

 

The Tenaha Little Dribblers Basketball program has two teams headed to the national tournament April 8-11th in Nacona, Texas. The Tenaha Sr. Boys’ Team (7th & 8th graders) beat Lovelady in the regional tournament championship game last Saturday to qualify. They are coached by Marcus Bowman. The Jr. Boys (2nd-4th graders) were runner-ups to advance to the national event. Their coach is Jay Moore. Both squads will be competing against 13 other teams across the state of Texas. In order to help with lodging and food costs during the tournament, the parents are having a bake sale in front of the Tiger Stop this Saturday, March 28th.  The parents and kids would love for the community to come out and buy some cookies and cake to support their teams.  

 

College Rodeo:

 

Panola College Rodeo team competed in the Southern Region Rodeo last week in Bryan as Bareback rider Wyatt Denny to win the event.

Denny is on his way to a dominating Southern Regional title where he leads the rest of the field by over 400 points. Caleb Cogbill, a freshman at Panola placed in steer wrestling with a time of 5.7, while Nicole Reeves and Kagen Cassaday took part in Team Roping, and Gannon Ivy in Bull Riding to take over second place in the regional standings. Ivy is a sophomore from Hampton, Arkansas. Panola will be back in action at the next regional rodeo in Hillsboro, April 17-18.

 

Power Lifting:

 

The boys' state meet is this weekend in Abilene with several local lifters taking part.

 

Center - Devincent Hoyt, who was second at region in the 240 lb. division.

 

Shelbyville – Kal Metcalf was gold medalist in the 242 lb. division at region, while Octavian Burrell was silver medalist in the 198 lb. division.

 

Joaquin - Case Chambliss was gold medalist in the 148 lb. division at region.
