Shelbyville Lady Dragon Power Lifters bring home state championships

The Shelbyville High School Lady Dragons Powerlifting program made history by producing the school’s first gold medal state champions, Harlie Hagler and Katie Casey, at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Meet held in Corpus Christi on Saturday March 21.  Savannah Talbert also won a  fourth place medal at the state meet.

The seven member team Shelbyville High School Lady Dragons Powerlifting team consisting of Freshman Katie Casey, Sophomores Hannah Hall and Kennedy Parker, Junior Cleosha Jeter, and Seniors Harlie Hagler, Savannah Talbert, and Tristan Wilburn, had all seven girls finish in the top 10 of their respective weight classes at the state meet.  The Lady Dragons finished third as a team in the state, trailing only Champion Hawley High School and Runner-up Seagraves High School.

Savannah finished her senior year with her best total of the season of 715 pounds in the 123 pound division.  She had her best squat and deadlift of the season at 285 pounds and 305 pounds respectively. She also set a regional record of 300 pounds in deadlift.  Savannah also earned her way on to the Academic All State 2nd Team.

Katie also saved her best day for the state meet, posting her best total of 955, best squat of 415 and best deadlift of 385 pounds.  She was in 2nd place 60 pounds behind the leader going into her last lift.  The stage was set for a come from behind win and Katie needed to deadlift 25 more pounds than her previous best of 360 in order to take gold.  She rose to the occasion and pulled 385 pounds from the floor giving her the win.

Harlie was the silver medalist last year at the state meet and added 110 pounds to last years state total for a 910 pound gold medal performance.  Her 400 pound squat was good enough for her to earn the ‘’Outstanding Squat’’ award for the heavy weight platform.  Harlie had her best bench of the season at 185 pounds leading her to a 35 pound victory.  Harlie added an Academic All State 1st Team selection to her Championship day.
