Weather Update @ 1 p.m. ; Flood Safety Awareness Week

As of 12:30 pm, we had picked up additional totals of 1/3 inch of rain in most areas with light to moderate rain at times continuing to fall.  My weather station is seeing a rain rate of 1/2 inch per hour moderate rain.  This will likely cause the NWS to issue a revision to its flood advisory for the Attoyac Bayou. This morning's advisory had the flooding scheduled to drop below flood stage by Sunday morning...Heavy rain is currently occurring in the head waters to our North and West.

... Today's topic...

the difference between watch and warning
A watch means to be ready and prepare.  A watch is issued when a specific weather hazard is possible.  For example... if conditions are such that flooding may occur... a Flood Watch will be issued.  A watch gives time for preparations.  This includes preparing your home for flooding if you live in a flood plain or driving alternate routes to avoid flooded roads to reach home... work... or school.

Finally... a watch also allows you to test your communications plans and alert family and friends to the threat of dangerous weather.

A warning means to take action.  A warning is issued when a specific weather hazard is occurring or will be occurring very soon.  If a flood or Flash Flood Warning is issued and you are in a flood prone area... move immediately to higher ground.

Follow evacuation orders if they are issued.  If you encounter a roadway that is covered in water... do not try to drive through the water.  Turn around... don't drown.  It is never safe to drive or walk through flood waters.
