Local Sports Round up 03/12/15; Riders open with 3-1 win over Tatum, weather playing havoc with games

Baseball:

 

The state-ranked Center Roughriders got their district Dist. 19-4A opener in the books last night and take a 3-1 win over Tatum at Roughrider Field. Jacob Mitchell picked up the victory. At the plate, Taylor Tomlin had two doubles and RBIs, while Dalton Horton got a hit and RBI and Josh Burns had two singles. The Riders are now 7-1-1 on the season. Coach David Sheppard advises the Hallsville tournament this weekend has been cancelled. The Riders will be playing in a round-robin this Friday and Saturday in Henderson, weather permitting. A schedule of when Center plays this weekend will be released today, once the weather passes. Other teams in the Hallsville event are Marshall, Whitehouse, and Henderson.

 

The Riders will return to district play at home Tuesday against Henderson.

 

The Tenaha Tigers dropped their season and district opener to Gary yesterday, 1-7. Tenaha will be at Timpson next Tuesday.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs open district with a 19-1 win over Newton.

 

The Timpson Bears and Shelbyville Dragons tried to get their game in yesterday, but school officials in Timpson said conditions remain too wet. The game will be made up when possible.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons are scheduled to play Grapeland in a double-header Saturday in Shelbyville starting at noon.

 

The Joaquin Rams have a bye Friday before having their district home-opener next Tuesday against Martinsville. Joaquin officials say they will keep pushing the cancelled game from Tuesday with Mount Enterprise back until field conditions allow play.

 

Weather permitting:

 

The Timpson Bears are in the Lufkin-Hudson Tournament today thru Saturday.

 

The Tenaha Tigers are idle and will resume district at Timpson next Tuesday.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs will be taking part in the Kirbyville Tournament.

 

The San Augustine Wolves are home to play Brookeland in district action Friday.

 

The Broaddus Bulldogs will host Chireno Friday.

 

Softball (Friday, Weather Permitting):

 

The Center Lady Riders were scheduled to be at home to play Diboll in district Friday. However, games have been cancelled due to weather.

 

The Joaquin Lady Rams game scheduled for yesterday in Joaquin has been rescheduled for noon Saturday in Wells. The Lady Rams are to host Mount Enterprise Friday, but no decision has been made, yet.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons go to Zavalla.

 

The Timpson Lady Bears are home against Douglass.

 

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs go to Corrigan.

FOX Sports Southwest will provide live television and webcast coverage this week of the UIL boys’ basketball state tournament from the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Semifinal games on Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13 will be streamed on FoxSportsSouthwest.com.

Championship games on Saturday, March 14 will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest.

College Hoops:

 

SFA Lumberjacks and Lady Jacks are both in the Southland Conference Tournament in Katy this weekend. The men will play in the tourney semi-final Friday, with the Lady Jacks having a bye until Saturday.

 

Signs Letter of Intent:

 

Another local athlete has signed to further his education past high school as Tenaha’s D’Andre Thomas signed a letter of intent to play with the Kilgore College Rangers football team. Thomas was a wide receiver for the Tigers. He looks to be used as a wide out and defensive safety for Kilgore.
