Local Sports Round Up 03/11/15; 22-2A All-Dist. basketball named, baseball, softball teams attempt to make-up games

The Dist. 22-2A Boys’ All-District Basketball selections were announced yesterday and the superlatives were dominated by the Shelbyville Dragons and Tenaha Tigers. Named MVP was Shelbyville Jr., JJ Boykins. Meanwhile, Dragon Jr., Marcus Edwards was the Defensive Most Valuable Player, and Tenaha Jr. Colton Goeke (Gay-Key) was Offensive Most Valuable Player. The Newcomer of the Year Award is shared between Trae Gardner of Tenaha and Jeremy Boykins of Shelbyville. Named Coach of the Year was Jerod Roland of Shelbyville. FOX Sports Southwest will provide live television and webcast coverage this week of the UIL boys basketball state tournament from the Alamodome in San Antonio.


Semifinal games on Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13 will be streamed on FoxSportsSouthwest.com.

Championship games on Saturday, March 14 will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest.

College Hoops:

 

Post-season honors roll in for SFA basketball as Lady Jack’s head coach Brandon Schneider has tabbed Southland Conference Coach of the Year and Porsha Roberts was named the Defensive Player of the Year. The Lady Jacks will enter the Southland Conference Tournament this weekend in Katy.

 

Baseball:

 

As expected most games were cancelled yesterday due to weather conditions. Teams have scheduled to make-up most of those cancellations today.

 

The Center Roughriders will now play Tatum in the district opener in Center at 7 p.m. tonight at Roughrider Field. Varsity will play only.

 

The Timpson Bears and Shelbyville Dragons will try to get their cancelled game in today in Timpson starting at 6:30 p.m.

 

Later this week:

 

The Center Riders are scheduled to play in the Hallsville Tournament Thursday thru Saturday.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons are scheduled to play Grapeland in a double-header Saturday in Shelbyville starting at noon.

 

The Joaquin Rams have a bye Friday before having their district home-opener next Tuesday against Martinsville.

 

The Timpson Bears are in the Lufkin-Hudson Tournament Thursday thru Saturday.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs will be taking part in the Kirbyville Tournament.

 

The Tenaha Tigers are idle and will resume district at Timpson next Tuesday.

 

The San Augustine Wolves are home to play Brookeland in district action Friday.

 

The Broaddus Bulldogs will host Chireno Friday.

 

Softball:

 

Weather cancellations Tuesday also affected the girls’ action. Those games scheduled yesterday will likely be made up today.

 

Friday

 

The Center Lady Riders are home to play Diboll in district play Friday.

 

The Joaquin Lady Rams host Mount Enterprise.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons go to Zavalla.

 

The Timpson Lady Bears are home against Douglass.

 

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs go to Corrigan.

 

Soccer:

 

The Center Roughriders defeat Jasper, 4-3 last night in district play. Center is idle Friday and will close-out the regular season March 20 at Hudson.
