Prosecution rest its case in Newton County sheriff's trial in San Augustine

In Day 2 of Newton County Sheriff Eddie Shannon's trial in San Augustine Tuesday the prosecution rested after calling several witnesses that were present to Shannon's alleged terroristic threat against County Judge Truman Dougharty and the Newton County Commissioners' Court.

Among those to testify yesterday was Shannon's Chief Deputy Cynthia Hall, who said the newly-elected Shannon made the statement, "If I knew someone who was terminally ill, I would have them shoot them all." This followed a meeting in April 2014 when Shannon became angry at the county officials over his plans to replace a wrecked patrol vehicle.

Also hearing the alleged threat was Shannon's secretary Sherry Moore, who supported him in the election, but said he was a ticking time bomb and she didn't know what to expect from him.

The defense has been pointing out the key investigator in the case, Texas Ranger Haralson and Judge Dougharty, both former state troopers, patrolled together and believes there's a conflict of interest.

Another Newton County elected official, District Attorney Courtney Ponchier testified she feared Shannon and even carried a gun for personal protection after being informed of the threat against county officials.

Proceedings ended Tuesday with the defense calling witnesses.

The case is being prosecuted by Tyler County DA Lou Ann Cloy. Judge Joe Ned Dean of Groveton is hearing the trial in the San Augustine County Courthouse.

Shannon was indicted and charged with Terroristic Threat for his alleged remarks. His defense requested the change of venue.
