Local Sports Round up 03/10/15; Riders No. 21 in 4A state rankings, baseball & softball on tap today, weather permitting

The Center Roughriders have cracked the Texas High School Baseball.com Class 4A state rankings coming in at No. 21, in the poll released Monday. Center is 6-1-1 on the season, with their only loss and tie coming to Class 3A's No. 4 ranked team, Central Heights. Dist. 19-4A rival Carthage (3-4) is No. 18 in the state rankings. Texarkana Pleasant Grove is the state's No. 1 4A team. In Class 2A, defending state champion Douglass is No. 1 and Beckville No. 17.

 

Baseball: Tuesday District Openers (Weather permitting)

The Center Roughriders will open up at Tatum. JV first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

The Timpson Bears will be at the Shelbyville Dragons in a 6:30 p.m. start.

The Joaquin Rams open district at Mount Enterprise at 6:30 p.m.

The Garrison Bulldogs are home to play Newton starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Tenaha Tigers will be at Gary for a 6:30 p.m. start.

The San Augustine Wolves go to West Sabine and the Broaddus Bulldogs are home to play Chester, both with 4:30 p.m. starts.

 

Softball: District (Weather permitting)

The Center Lady Riders will open district Friday at home against Diboll in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons will host Brookeland at 5 p.m.

The Joaquin Lady Rams go to Wells in a 6 p.m. start.

The Timpson Lady Bears go to Mount Enterprise at 5 p.m.

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs will open district play at home with Newton at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

 

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks were rewarded by the Southland Conference for their big basketball season Monday. Junior Thomas Walkup was named the league’s Player of the Year, and Brad Underwood was named Coach of the Year for the second straight season in voting by league representatives. SFA enters the Southland Conference post-season tournament later this week in Katy.

Shelby County Ducks Unlimited is preparing for its annual Green Wing event at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 21. The event will be held at Bob & Sheilah Reeves’ residence on County Road 3121 off Hwy. 7 east of Center, right after passing the airport. There will be prizes for all kids, along with Texas Parks & Wildlife Game Wardens providing hunter safety, Mike Hudman with Black Water Retrievers with a dog demo and a free hot dog meal. The 8th annual Logansport Chamber of Commerce Sand Bass Tournament on the Sabine River in Logansport is scheduled for this Saturday, March 14. First prize is $5,000; second $2,000; and third is $1,500. The prize for “Big Bass” is a pool, dependent on the number of registered teams. Entry fee is $150 per team, with an optional $50 per team for Big Bass. Logansport is recognized as the Sand Bass Fishing Capital of the World. Fishermen can obtain get registration forms online at the Facebook page SAND BASS TOURNAMENT, or on the Town of Logansport Chamber of Commerce website. Participants are urged to register early since it may be necessary to restrict to 200 teams. The Shelby County Bass Anglers will conduct the weigh-in. There will be a pre-tournament Fish Fry on March 13. It’s open to the public and will be held along the Logansport Riverfront with an auction and door prizes included.
