A couple arrested last month in connection to the death of an elderly Jasper man have now been charged with murder.

Court records indicate 48-year old Robert Mounts and 29-year old Ashley Nicole Lewis were both charged with first-degree felony murder. Their bail is set at $500,000 each.

Herbert Deaton was reported missing by family member in Nov. 2014. The 85-year old's body was found some eight miles from Jasper with cause of death ruled homicidal violence.

Mounts and Lewis were arrested in Indiana in early February for outstanding warrants for credit card abuse and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Jasper County Sheriff Mitchell Newman said the couple, “made a living out of conning.”
