Not Meant to Be

Amazingly, the Tenaha Tigers have played the least amount of in-season basketball in the Region III playoff field.  After all, none of the other contenders in the Region can boast that their football season lasts until mid-December.   In fact, many of the top ranked contenders and
favorites in Region III don't even play football, thus, allowing them to begin the school year in the gym developing their fundamentals and team philosophy.  However, over the last four years in particular and over the vast majority of the time, the Tenaha Tiger basketball program faces the challenge of a late start in order to mount their charge towards a championship level.

This past weekend, the Tigers advanced to its 6th Regional Tournament in the last 7 years.  What a performance by the Tigers to even get to the Sweet 16 of the state playoffs.  Not only did the Tigers advance, they knocked on the door of yet another Region III Championship for Tenaha. On Saturday after a thrilling Friday night Semi-Final win over State ranked
#8 LaPoynor, the Tigers dreams of a 7th state tournament were dashed by a very capable #1 ranked Big Sandy Wildcat team by a score of 59-38.  For the Tigers, it was their 4th Regional Title game under 8 year head coach Todd Bodden, and with the loss the Tigers are 2-2 in those games.  The appearance for the Tigers marks the 9th time in the last 9 years that Tenaha has
advanced to a Regional championship game in football or boys basketball. That is a number unmatched by anyone in the Region and remarkable in and of itself.  

A quick start by the Tigers gave way to the suffocating pressure defense of the Wildcats.  They forced the Tigers out of rhythm and into uncharacteristic mistakes.  The outcome was still in some doubt in the 2nd half as the Tigers pulled within 28-25 midway through the 3rd quarter, but as the Tigers became desperate to close the gap with pressure, the Wildcats quality proved too much.  

LaPoynor and New Summerfield were both programs ranked highly by the polls.  They are both "non-football" programs.  They both lost to Tenaha.  The Tigers Regional Tournament run marked the 50th playoff game for Tenaha in football and boys and girls basketball over the last five years. That's ten playoff games per year over a five year span.  Just think about
that and consider that all of Shelby County combined (Tenaha excluded) has only 33 playoff game appearances in the same span.


Tenaha ISD Encourages Students To Get Involved

Participation in extracurricular activities can play a crucial role in the success of students.  The National Center for Education Statistics states, "Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply
academic skills in a real-world context, and are thus considered part of a well-rounded education."  Tenaha ISD believes that students that participate in extracurricular activities are less likely to drop out of school, able to maintain a higher attendance, able to maintain a higher average in the classroom and are likely to extend their education beyond the average high
school diploma.  

The fall semester resulted in an outstanding number of participants in extracurricular activities this year.  Whether it was band, football, UIL academic competition, robotics, cross country, or FFA, students came out in full force to be a part of something.  On average over 80% of the Middle School and High School population were involved in some type of extracurricular activity during the fall semester.   
 

With spring activities getting under way participation in track, baseball and tennis is expected to be high.  Tenaha Track Coach, Josh Furlow, expects participation numbers for Middle School and High School track to be between 65-70 students.  

How are such high numbers possible?  Students are never forced to make a choice between any extracurricular programs against another.  Students are able to spend equal amounts of time in each because the staff works together to coordinate time and, just as importantly, teach students to manage time.

 This participation exposes students to a wide range of disciplines which results in a well rounded education and best of all, opportunities for colleges.  Scholarships, to the tune of nearly $90,000 were issued to students last year, which are the focus for many participants in
extracurricular activities.  

Tenaha students work hard to be the best at what they do whether it is academic, fine arts or athletics.    Students are expected and encouraged to participate, get involved and be a part of the winning tradition of the
Tenaha Tigers!
