Local Sports Round up 03/09/15; Power Lifters headed to state competition

Several local power lifters are headed to state competition after placing at state high school powerlifting association regional meets last week. The boys’ state meet will be March 28 in Abilene, while the girls’ is March 19-21 in Corpus Christi.

 

Center - Devincent Hoyt placed second in the 240 lb. division with total lifts of 1,500 lbs. at Rusk last Thursday.  Girls’- Lady Riders Ryley Hudspeth in the 148 lb. division & Rachel Andrews in 220 lb. division on Feb. 28.

 

Shelbyville  Boys– Kal Metcalf was gold medalist in the 242 lb. division with total weight lifted 1,615 lbs. Teammate Octavian Burrell was silver medalist as qualified for state 1,395 lbs. total in the 198 lb. division. As a team, the Dragons placed third in Elkhart on Saturday.

 

Shelbyville Girls – The Lady Dragons placed second as a tem out of 29 teams at the regional meet in White Oak last Wednesday. Qualifying for the state meet: Cleosha Jeter in the 105 lb. division; Savannah Talbert was silver medalist in the 123 lb. division; Tristin Wilburn in the 148 lb. division; Kennedy Parker in the 165 lb. division; Harlie Hagler was silver medalist in the 181 lb. division; and Katie Kasey was silver medalist in the 220 lb. division.

 

Joaquin – Boys’- Chris Chambliss was gold medalist in the 148 lb. division with total weight of 1,200 lbs. Girls’- Desere Cooper in the 220+ division.

 

 

The Tenaha Tigers had their basketball season come to an end Saturday just short of a state tournament berth, as #1 Dallardsville-Big Sandy grabbed a 59-38 win in the Region III Final at Leon High School. The Tigers won Friday night’s semi-final, 67-59 over LaPoynor.

 

The Center Varsity Baseball Roughriders wrapped-up the non-district portion of their schedule with two wins and a tie in the rain-shortened Oil Belt Classic last weekend. Center gets a 9-2 over Glenbrook, Louisiana on Friday, defeats Whitehouse, 7-1 in Saturday’s early game, before finishing with a tie against Central Heights, 5-5. The Riders only loss of the season came to Central Heights last Tuesday. The Riders are 6-1-1 and will open district at Tatum Tuesday.

 

The Rider JV Baseball team played Spring Hill in a double-header at home Saturday. The first game ended in a, 4-4 tie, with the Rider JV taking a 6-0 win in the second.

 

At the Timpson Bears’ Baseball Tournament, Timpson wins the championship going 3-for-3, including a 13-1 win over Chester Friday night, and 14-2 against Neches and 10-2 over April Springs Saturday.

 

All local high school baseball and softball teams will either be hoping to open or continue district play on Tuesday, weather permitting.

 

The Center Roughrider Soccer team loses to Palestine, 2-0 Friday. Both the Riders and Lady Riders are home to play Jasper tonight at Roughrider Stadium. It’s senior night for the girls as they have their last home game. Action starts at 5 p.m.

College Hoops:

 

The SFA Lumberjacks clinched their third-straight Southland Conference championship with a 64-55 win over rival Sam Houston State Saturday night before a standing-room only crowd at Johnson Coliseum. Meanwhile, the conference champ Lady Jacks come away with a 79-65 victory against the Sam Houston ladies. The Lumberjacks and Lady Jacks enter the Southland Conference Tournament this week in Katy. SFA men will play in the tourney semi-final Friday, with the Lady Jacks having a bye until Saturday.

 

Shelby County Ducks Unlimited is preparing for its annual Green Wing event at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 21. The event will be held at Bob & Sheilah Reeves’ residence on County Road 3121 off Hwy. 7 east of Center, right after passing the airport. There will be prizes for all kids, along with Texas Parks & Wildlife Game Wardens providing hunter safety, Mike Hudman with Black Water Retrievers with a dog demo and a free hot dog meal. The 8th annual Logansport Chamber of Commerce Sand Bass Tournament on the Sabine River in Logansport is scheduled for this Saturday, March 14. First prize is $5,000; second $2,000; and third is $1,500. The prize for “Big Bass” is a pool, dependent on the number of registered teams. Entry fee is $150 per team, with an optional $50 per team for Big Bass. Logansport is recognized as the Sand Bass Fishing Capital of the World. Fishermen can obtain get registration forms online at the Facebook page SAND BASS TOURNAMENT, or on the Town of Logansport Chamber of Commerce website. Participants are urged to register early since it may be necessary to restrict to 200 teams. The Shelby County Bass Anglers will conduct the weigh-in. There will be a pre-tournament Fish Fry on March 13. It’s open to the public and will be held along the Logansport Riverfront with an auction and door prizes included.
