Local Sports Round up 03/05/15; Weather cancellations affect baseball, softball tournaments

Baseball:

 

The Center Varsity Baseball games scheduled for the Oil Belt Classic Tournament today have been cancelled. Friday is still scheduled to go as planned with the Varsity Riders playing Glenbrook, La. in Henderson at 10 a.m. Saturday’s games will be in Kilgore, with the Riders playing Whitehouse at 9 a.m. and Central Heights at 1 p.m.

 

Center will open district March 10 at Tatum.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons are in the Woden Tournament. The Dragons will play at 2 p.m. today, and Friday March 6 @ at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday.

 

The Timpson Bears will be hosting their tournament Friday & Saturday. Neches, Chester, Apple Springs and Timpson are participating. The Bears will play Neches at 5 p.m. Friday.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs are to take part in the Elysian Fields Tourney beginning today.

 

The Tenaha Tigers will open their season today in the Gary Tournament.

 

The Joaquin Athletic Booster Club is sponsoring the Bash on the Border Baseball Tournament today thru Saturday, March 5 thru March 7. High school teams from Texas and Louisiana will be playing and are guaranteed four games. Texas teams include Joaquin, Alto, Broaddus and Hemphill. Louisiana teams are Logansport, Mansfield, Stanley and Anacoco. Trophies will be presented to each state champion and trophies to over 1st, 2nd and 3ed place teams. The athletic boosters will offer meals. All games are being played at the Joaquin ISD field.

Softball:

 

Due to possible inclement weather conditions, the Center Lady Rider Softball Tournament scheduled from March 5th-March 7th has been cancelled. This also affects the Joaquin Lady Rams and Shelbyville Lady Dragons, both who were to play. The Lady Riders are home March 13 to play Diboll.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons district opener at Burkeville will be at 4 p.m. on March 9, and Shelbyville will hosts Brookeland in district play Tuesday.

 

The Joaquin Lady Ram Varsity softball game scheduled yesterday against Cushing has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. today in Joaquin.  The Lady Rams have a district game in Wells next Tuesday, March 10.

 

The Timpson Lady Bears are in the Longview Tournament Friday-Saturday. The Lady Bears open district Tuesday at Mount Enterprise.

 

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs go to Pittsburgh Friday. Garrison will open district play at home with Newton Tuesday.

Class 2A Region Semi-Final Championship

 

The Tenaha Tigers will meet LaPoynor at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Jewett Leon. The Region III Semi-Finals begin with #1 Dallardsville-Big Sandy against #9 Kerens at 5 p.m. The winners meet in the final at 2 p.m. Saturday with the trip to San Antonio on the line.

Tennis:

 

The Center High School Varsity Tennis team has been busy getting ready for District in a few weeks. Two weeks ago, they participated in Kilgore and finished 4th overall out of 16 teams. Coach Leon Dykes says, tThe teams were comprised of mostly 4A and 5A schools. The Center Varsity Tennis team will play in Corsicana Friday.

 

The Center High School JV Tennis Team traveled to Jacksonville on Tuesday, March 3rd. The results are as follows: Boys singles:  Abram Morales - 1st place; Girls singles:  Lexi Parker - 1st place, Emma Locke - 2nd place,  Jacee Hooks - 3rd place; Girls doubles:  Mackenzie Dykes / Hailey Haddox - 1st place;Taylor Amburn / Rylee Morris - 3rd place; Mixed doubles: Kobe Whisenant / Kandace Lee - 3rd place; Boys doubles:  Tyler Ferguson / Joel Martinez - consolation finalists.

 

Power Lifting:

 

Two Center Lady Rider Power Lifters are headed to the Texas High School Women’s Power Lifting State Championship in Corpus Christi March 19 & 20. Rachel Andrews & Rylee Hudspeth will be competing.

 

Eight members on the Center High School Boys Powerlifting team have qualified for the Regional Powerlifting Meet in Rusk. They will lift today. Qualifying lifters are: Witt Dockens, Jacarlos hall, Devincent Hoyt, Joe King, Denzel Moore, Daniel Rodriguez, Hairo Salazar, and Brendan Stanley.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragon Power Lifting team will compete at the regional meet White Oak today.

 

Meanwhile, four Shelbyville Dragon Power Lifters have qualified for the regional power lifting meet to be held Saturday in Elkhart.

 

Soccer:

 

The Riders and Lady Riders will be at Palestine Friday.

 

College Hoops:

 

The SFA Lumberjacks and Lady Jacks have two rivals in the remainder of the week, as Northwestern State visits Johnson Coliseum tonight for two starting at 5:30 p.m., and Sam Houston State Saturday.

 

SFA Athletics and the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce have teamed up again with Cram the Coliseum, an event designed to bring more from the community to Lumberjack and Ladyjack basketball games. Free admission tickets are available for Ladyjack and Lumberjack games on March 5 and 7. The tickets come 10 to a page and are available at the Nacogdoches County Chamber, 2516 North St., and online at nacogdoches.org in Hot New. Tickets can be used for entrance to the following Ladyjack and Lumberjack basketball games:  Cram the Coliseum - Thursday, March 5, SFA vs. Northwestern State, Ladyjacks begin at 5:30 p.m. and Lumberjacks at 8 p.m.; and Cram the Coliseum 2 - Saturday, March 7, SFA vs. Sam Houston State, Ladyjacks begin at 4 p.m. and Lumberjacks at 6 p.m. All games will be in William R. Johnson Coliseum.

 

The second annual Great East Texas Outdoorfest is coming up this week. The event is slated for Friday, March 6, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A concert will follow Saturday’s events. Gates for concert open at 6 p.m. All events are to be held at the Sabine County Rodeo Arena. During the two day event there will be live music, entertainment, food, fun, vendors, silent and live auctions. Lots of raffle prizes will be drawn for, with the grand prize being a pontoon boat. Tickets are available at getoutdoorsfest.com or they can be purchased during the event.

 

 

Shelby County Ducks Unlimited is preparing for its annual Green Wing event at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 21. The event will be held at Bob & Sheilah Reeves’ residence on County Road 3121 off Hwy. 7 east of Center, right after passing the airport. There will be prizes for all kids, along with Texas Parks & Wildlife Game Wardens providing hunter safety, Mike Hudman with Black Water Retrievers with a dog demo and a free hot dog meal. The 8th annual Logansport Chamber of Commerce Sand Bass Tournament on the Sabine River in Logansport is scheduled for March 14. First prize is $5,000; second $2,000; and third is $1,500. The prize for “Big Bass” is a pool, dependent on the number of registered teams. Entry fee is $150 per team, with an optional $50 per team for Big Bass. Logansport is recognized as the Sand Bass Fishing Capital of the World. Fishermen can obtain get registration forms online at the Facebook page SAND BASS TOURNAMENT, or on the Town of Logansport Chamber of Commerce website. Participants are urged to register early since it may be necessary to restrict to 200 teams. The Shelby County Bass Anglers will conduct the weigh-in. There will be a pre-tournament Fish Fry on March 13. It’s open to the public and will be held along the Logansport Riverfront with an auction and door prizes included.
