San Augustine Main Street preparing for 1st "A Texas Treasure Heritage Festival" May 2

Held in the heart of San Augustine, San Augustine Main Street proudly presents the 1st Annual “A Texas Treasure Heritage Festival” – a day filled with memories and remnants of the many heritages that contribute to the culture of San Augustine and East Texas!  To experience this unique culture firsthand, visit downtown San Augustine on May 2, 2015 and discover many of the generations-old traditions – and some emerging ones, too!

In conjunction with the festival, San Augustine County Farmer’s Market season will kick-off on the south side of the Courthouse with local grown produce and homemade goods.  Festival goers may also watch various food demos including how to prepare and cook fresh greens, Dutch oven cooking, how to make hot water corn bread and tea cakes and even how to make Indian Tacos.  Don’t miss the Pinto Bean Cook-off judging at “Bean Gazebo” at 10 AM.

The Festival additionally offers a day of entertainment, cultural displays, demonstrations, artists and artisans and live music.  Here you can see antique toys and cars, Indian artifacts, learn about the history of our native wildlife and watch various demos such as: quilting, genealogy research, doll making, grapevine wreath making, beekeeping and much more.  In addition, various entertainers will perform throughout the day including accomplished Native American style flute player, Rodney Barger, as well as local entertainers performing songs from the 30’s and 40’s, early African American music, songs of the Republic of Texas and a duet with fiddles and songs of the early west.

After enjoying the festival, take a stroll through downtown San Augustine and visit the charming gift shops, the old fashioned soda fountain at San Augustine Drug, the old town well at the Stripling Drug Building, the 1927 County Courthouse and “Junk in the Trunk” at Santa Fe Park.

Traditional heritage, including traditional festivals are important characteristics of a community's cultural identity.  It is important to pass on traditional culture to younger generations and preserve the history and endeavors of the town's forefathers and mothers.  The “A Texas Treasure Heritage Festival” is a grassroots, volunteer-oriented event with the goal of educating the community of rural East Texas heritage.  Please join us for a meaningful and fun day celebrating our history!  All proceeds generated by the event will be returned to the community through the continued efforts of San Augustine Main Street to beautify and promote downtown San Augustine.  To learn more about the event or how you may participate or help at the event, please contact Tracy Cox at 936-275-3172.
