Local Sports Round up 02/25/15; Riders headed to area round, Lady Dragons take OT win for region tourney berth, Octavius Evans receives another D-I offer

Basketball Playoffs:

 

Girls' Region Quarterfinals:

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons are headed to the Class 2A Region III Tournament this weekend after an exciting 44-39 overtime win against Cushing last night in the regional quarterfinals in Hudson. The game was tied at 39 at the end of regulation. Shelbyville will meet LaPoynor (46-39 winner over Cayuga) at 7 p.m. Friday at Jewett Leon in the region semis.

 

Meanwhile, the Tenaha Lady Tigers saw their season end, as Evadale takes a 41-40 win in Lufkin in region quarterfinal action. The winner has Hubbard in the region semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday at Jewett Leon.

 

Boys' Bi-District:

The Center Roughriders are headed to the area round of the state 4A playoffs after an 88-50 win over Jasper in a bi-district game in Rusk last night. Center and Jasper were tied at 17 after the end of the opening quarter, with the Riders up 44-25 at half and never looked back, taking a 64-30 lead into the final quarter. The Riders will play Mexia (def. Waco Connally) at 7 p.m. Friday in Jacksonville at what was the former Lon Morris College Gym.

The Timpson Bears lose to Carlisle, 71-59 in a 2A first-round playoff game at Tatum last night. Carlisle moves on to play Dallardsville Big Sandy in area.

 

The Broaddus Bulldogs had their season end last night as Evadale comes away with a 61-58 win. Evadale will meet New Summerfield in the second round.

 

The Tenaha Tigers will meet the San Augustine Wolves in Joaquin

Friday night in an area round game. Game details are being finalized.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons had a first-round bye by virtue of winning district, and will take on West Sabine in area this week. West Sabine beat West Hardin, 71-39 in bi-district. Next game details are being worked out.

Center Roughrider wide receiver Octavius Evans has received a second Division I offer to play football as Texas Tech has officially made the playmaker a target. According to East Texas Sports Network, new Rider Offensive Coordinator Ricky Joe Meeks said the 6-2, 180 sophomore has become the first East Texas player in the 2017 recruiting class to receive a second Division I offer. Evans was first offered by Louisiana Tech. Tenaha's Reginald Davis has been a part of the potent Texas Tech passing attack for a couple of seasons now, as well as several other east Texans. Through two varsity seasons, Evans has 112 catches for 1,332 yards and 11 touchdowns. He had 67 catches for 734 yards and eight touchdowns in 2014.

 

Soccer:

 

The Center Riders and Lady Riders played Hudson at Roughrider Stadium last night and both came away with wins. The Riders, 1-0, and the Lady Riders, 2-0. Both teams will be home to play Diboll Friday.

 

The Tenaha Lady Tigers' soccer team will finish the season with a small school tournament hosted by New Summerfield. The first game is against New Summerfield, Friday morning at 8:00 am, followed by a 12:00 game vs.  Robert E. Lee JV at Jacksonville College.  The final game of the season will be Saturday at 1:00 vs. the Crockett Lady Bulldogs at Jacksonville College.

 

Baseball:

 

The Center Riders will play in the Palestine Tournament Thursday through Saturday. On Thursday the Riders play at 1230 and 530 at Elkhart, and on Friday at 4 p.m. in Elkhart and 7 p.m. in Palestine

 

The Rider JV will be at the Central Heights Tournament Thursday playing at 12:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons will be playing in the Pine Cone Classic in Hemphill Thursday thru Saturday, while the Dragon JV is in the Douglass Tournament.

 

The Joaquin Rams, Timpson Bears and Broaddus Bulldogs are also in the Pine Cone Classic in Hemphill.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs are scheduled to be in the Elkhart Tournament starting Thursday.

 

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders are home to play Central Heights today???

 

The Lady Riders, Joaquin Lady Rams and Shelbyville Lady Dragons are all scheduled to play in the Cushing/Central Heights' Tournament Thursday thru Saturday.

 

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs are to play in the Trinity Tournament.

 

The second annual Great East Texas Outdoorfest is just around the corner. The event is slated for Friday, March 6, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A concert will follow Saturday’s events. Gates for concert open at 6 p.m. All events are to be held at the Sabine County Rodeo Arena. During the two day event there will be live music, entertainment, food, fun, vendors, silent and live auctions. Lots of raffle prizes will be drawn for, with the grand prize being a pontoon boat. Tickets are available at getoutdoorsfest.com or they can be purchased during the event.

 

The 8th annual Logansport Chamber of Commerce Sand Bass Tournament on the Sabine River in Logansport is scheduled for March 14. First prize is $5,000; second $2,000; and third is $1,500. The prize for “Big Bass” is a pool, dependent on the number of registered teams. Entry fee is $150 per team, with an optional $50 per team for Big Bass. Logansport is recognized as the Sand Bass Fishing Capital of the World. Fishermen can obtain get registration forms online at the Facebook page SAND BASS TOURNAMENT, or on the Town of Logansport Chamber of Commerce website. Participants are urged to register early since it may be necessary to restrict to 200 teams. The Shelby County Bass Anglers will conduct the weigh-in. There will be a pre-tournament Fish Fry on March 13. It’s open to the public and will be held along the Logansport Riverfront with an auction and door prizes included.
