Local Sports Round up 02/18/15; Shelbyville Lady Dragons advance to area, Riders finish as 19-4A co-champs, to play Tatum Friday for playoff seeding

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons grab a 59-42 win against Overton in a Class 2A bi-district game in Cushing last night. Shelbyville will now face the Broaddus Lady Bulldogs (Dist. 23-2A champion) in area this week. A site, day and time will be determined.

Boys' Basketball:

 

The Center Roughriders will now face the Tatum Eagles for a third time this season after both teams ended Dist. 19-4A play last night in a dead heat as co-district champions at 7-1. Center and Tatum will play a district tiebreaker for playoff seeding at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Gary. Tatum beat Rusk, 62-41. Looks like the top seed will get Jasper in bi-district, while the #2 seed will take on Huntington. Carthage is the third-seed team in post-season, with Henderson and Rusk fighting it out for the fourth playoff spot.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons beat the Timpson Bears and the Tenaha Tigers get an 84-51 win against the Joaquin Rams, as Tenaha will be second seed from Dist. 22-2A. The Dragons are champs and have a first-round bye. Meanwhile, the Bears will be the third and final seed in the playoffs. Looks like the Tigers and Bears will meet Cushing and Carlisle from Dist. 21-2A. The seeding is still being sorted out.

 

The San Augustine Wolves grabbed the Dist. 23-2A championship with a 62-57 overtime win over West Sabine in SA last night. The Wolves have a first-round bye, with West Sabine looking to play Evadale in bi-district. No score on Broaddus and Brookeland as they battle it out for third seed.

College Hoops:

 

The SFA Lumberjacks return home to play Nicholls State in a double-header with the LadyJacks Saturday.

 

Soccer:

 

The Center Riders and Lady Riders went to Jasper for district matches last night with the Riders taking a 2-1 win, and the Lady Riders losing, 0-7. Both teams have a bye Friday and will return to action at home against Hudson Feb. 24.

 

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders will be at the Hudson Tourney beginning Thursday.

 

The Joaquin Lady Rams will start the season Thursday in the Carthage Tournament.

 

The Timpson Lady Bears will be in the Hudson Tournament Thursday to open the season.

 

Baseball:

 

The Center Riders’ will scrimmage with Central at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Pollock Central. The Riders are scheduled to have their final scrimmage at home against Jasper this Friday starting with JV at 4:30 p.m.

 

The Center Roughrider Baseball program will be sponsoring a benefit Hit-a-Thon at 11 a.m. Saturday at Roughrider Field. Players hope to raise at least $5,000 for the program to help off-set expenses. Players have been asking for donations and any help would be appreciated. The hit-a-thon’s format will have each Rider getting 10 pitches, with the Total distance hit times what was pledged per foot the amount raised by the player. The Shelbyville Dragons are scheduled to scrimmage West Sabine at 5 p.m. Thursday in Shelbyville.

 

The Joaquin Rams will be in the Stanley Jamboree Saturday.


The high school regular season begins next Monday, Feb. 23.

 

College Basketball:

The Panola Fillies took a 65-61 win over Coastal Bend College last Saturday. The Fillies will return to action at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon against Kilgore College in Kilgore.

 

Power Lifting:

Center High School will be hosting an invitational at Center High School Gym at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

 

The San Augustine Lions Sporting Clay Shoot will be held this Saturday, Feb. 21 at Fairway Farm, located five miles east of San Augustine on Hwy. 21. All proceeds benefit Texas Lions’ Camp, local charities and scholarships. The shoot will consist of four or five person teams. Individuals are welcome and everyone will be placed on a team. There will be one flight beginning at 10 a.m., registration starts at 8 a.m. Fee is $100 per shooter. Food, drinks and prizes will be provided. A special brass plated lever-action Henry rifle donated by T-Roy Broussard from the “Swamp People” TV show will be auctioned and another Henry rifle will be awarded to the “top shooter”. The Logansport Chamber of Commerce will have their 8th annual Sand Bass Tournament Saturday, March 14. Entry fee is $150 per team, with an optional $50 per team for Big Bass. Fishing begins at 6 a.m., and boats must be landed on Toledo Bend or the Sabine River. Fishing on the bank is also allowed. First-place will pay $5,000. Prize money payouts are based on a minimum of 75 teams entered. A copy of the tournament rules and an entry form is available at Center Broadcasting, 307 San Augustine St. in Center.
