Local Sports Round up 02/13/15; Martinsville takes Game 1 of 22-2A tie-breaker, to face Shelbyville tonight, Rider Golf Team wins Bullard Tourney

In Sports,

High School Basketball:

Game 1 of the Dist. 22-2A Girls’ Basketball Tie-breaker in Tenaha last night went the way of the Martinsville Lady Pirates, as they take a 42-24 win over the Joaquin Lady Rams to advance to tonight’s game against the Shelbyville Lady Dragons for the #2 seed in the state playoffs. Tonight’s game tips-off at 7:30 p.m. in Tenaha. A Shelbyville win and the Lady Dragons are #2, and Martinsville the #3 seed. If Martinsville wins, they’re #2 seed and Game 3 at 1 p.m. Saturday between Joaquin and Shelbyville would be for the #3 and final seed.

The Center Roughriders have a chance to avenge their only Dist. 19-4A loss of the season when they go to Tatum tonight. Center (5-1) lost in OT to Tatum (6-0), 51-49 on Jan. 27. The Riders are playoff bound, but having a share of that district title would be sweet. Carthage (3-4) goes to Henderson (1-5) in the districts other game.

The Shelbyville Dragons (7-1) can take the district championship with a win at home against Beckville tonight. Meanwhile, Timpson (6-2) and Tenaha (5-3), as we understand, have both secured playoff berths, regardless of the outcome of the next two district games. Due to Timpson defeating Martinsville (4-4) in head-to-head play, they win a tie-breaker, should both teams end up with the same district record. The boys’ bi-district round of the playoffs will begin the Week of Feb. 23.

Shelbyville & Beckville game begins at 5:00 pm starting with JV and followed by Varsity.

By the way, the Timpson at Tenaha boys’ game starts at 6 p.m. tonight, followed by Game 2 of the girls’ district tie-breaker series.

The Dist. Champion Tenaha Lady will have a playoff warm-up game against District 16-2A Champion Union Grove at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Arp High School.

Dist. 23-2A’s top-two teams are pretty well set heading into the final two games of the regular season. San Augustine and West Sabine are 7-1, but the fight continues for the championship, and could be headed to a show-down next Tuesday in SA when they two meet. Brookeland is 4-3, while Broaddus are 3-4 as they battle for third. Brookeland goes to San Augustine Friday and Zavalla (0-7) heads to Broaddus. Brookeland beat the Wolves in their first meeting, 75-71 last month.

The San Augustine Lady Wolves will play Colmesneil in a Class 2A bi-district round game at 6 p.m. Monday at Angelina College in Lufkin. That game will be followed at 8 p.m. by the Garrison Lady Bulldog and Crockett Class 3A bi-district game. Gate prices are $5 and $3. San Augustine finished in second place. Dist. Champion Broaddus has a first-round bye. Brookeland is the third-seed team.
