Duo said to be "persons of interest" in death of elderly Jasper County man returned to Texas

The man and woman who are said to be “persons of interest” in the death of an 85-year old Jasper man have been returned to Jasper County.

Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman along with a sheriff’s department investigator, deputy and Texas Ranger Danny Young made the over 1,600 mile round trip to Terre Haute, Indiana after 48-year old Robert Kelly Mounts and his girlfriend, 29-year old Ashley Nicole Lewis were found in a motel room there last week and were arrested by U.S. Marshals.

The duo was wanted after Herbert Deaton’s body was found in an area near his home in Northwest Jasper County in November.

An autopsy revealed Deaton died as the result of “homicidal violence”.

The couple’s one-year-old baby was with them at the time of arrest.

The investigation has not tabbed them as murder suspects.

They were arrested for credit/debit card abuse and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle after Deaton’s pickup was found abandoned in Abilene.
