Local Sports Round up 02/04/15; Riders sweep Carthage, Tenaha avenges loss to Shelbyville, Lady Tigers take 22-2A title

High school basketball,

 

The Center Roughriders kicked-off the second round of Dist. 19-4A with a 52-45 win over the Carthage Bulldogs at Roughrider Gym last night. Center improves to 4-1, a half-game back of front-running Tatum (4-0) who was idle. The Riders are two-games ahead of Carthage, who falls to 2-3. Rusk beat Henderson, 60-57 to get their first district win. The Riders are idle Friday.

 

In sub-varsity action it was a sweep as the Rider JV gets a 49-42 win over Carthage, and the 9th Grade Riders win, 60-48.

 

The Lady Riders gave it a good effort, but fall to the Carthage Lady Bulldogs, 39-45 during senior night. Center is 0-7. The JV Lady Riders lose to Carthage, 31-33. They’ll close out the season at Rusk next Tuesday.

 

In Dist. 22-2A, a big crowd in Tenaha saw the Tigers get revenge on the Shelbyville Dragons, taking a 68-65 win. Tenaha goes to 4-2, while Shelbyville drops to 5-1. Timpson keeps pace, as the Bears beat Martinsville, 64-57. Timpson and Tenaha are 4-2. Martinsville drops to 3-3. The Joaquin Rams get their first district win, 54-51 over Beckville. Joaquin and Beckville are 1-5.

 

The Tenaha Lady Tigers take the 22-2A championship with a 55-24 win over the Shelbyville Lady Dragons. Tenaha is 8-0, while Shelbyville is now 5-3. Martinsville beat the Timpson Lady Bears and takes over second place at 6-2. The Joaquin Lady Rams keep their playoff hopes going as they get a 42-25 victory over Beckville, and go to 4-4. Big match-up in Joaquin Friday with Shelbyville in town.

 

In Dist. 23-2A, the San Augustine Wolves beat Broaddus, 70-50, to maintin a share of the district lead at 5-1. No score on West Sabine/Zavalla, but a West Sabine win has them still tied with SA. Pineywoods shocked Brookeland, 78-72. Brookeland is knotted with Broaddus in second at 3-3.

 

The San Augustine Lady Wolves lose to the Broaddus Lady Bulldogs, 28-36.

 

In Dist. 22-3A, Newton is 9-1 in the lead with a 61-33 win over the Garrison Bulldogs (1-8). Central Heights is 8-2 after beating Hemphill, 89-27.  Woodville is also 8-2 with a 51-44 win over Central.

Soccer:

 

The Center Roughriders and Lady Roughriders take wins over Gladewater last night. The Riders get a 9-0 decision, and the Lady Riders, 6-3. The Riders are open Friday, while the Lady Riders host Tatum Friday.

 

The Tenaha Tiger and Lady Tiger Soccer teams will be at Carlisle Thursday for two games starting at 7 p.m.

 

College Hoops:

 

The Panola Fillies fell to San Jacinto College-North  90-77 Saturday.

 

The Panola Fillies & Ponies Basketball teams will be at Bossier Parish Community College for a double-header starting at 5:30 p.m. tonight.

 

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders will have a scrimmage against the Shelbyville Lady Dragons in Center at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

 

Baseball:

 

The first baseball scrimmages start next week.

 

The Joaquin Athletic Booster Club is sponsoring the Border on the Bash Baseball Tournament March 5 thru March 7. High school teams from Texas and Louisiana will be playing and are guaranteed four games. Texas teams include Joaquin, Alto, Broaddus and Hemphill. Louisiana teams are Logansport, Mansfield, Stanley and Anacoco. Trophies will be presented to each state champion and trophies to over 1st, 2nd and 3ed place teams. The athletic boosters will offer meals. All games are being played at the Joaquin ISD field.

 

Sign Ups:

 

The Center ASA Softball League will have late sign-ups on Thursday, February 5, from 5:30-8 pm at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Pecan Street in Center. Any questions, call Feather at 936/332-6050.

 

Center Youth Baseball will be holding signups for the 2015 season February 6 & 13 from 5-7pm at the Center Middle School Cafeteria. If anyone has any questions or is interesting in coaching please call Jason Mitchell at (936)488-2863 or Melissa McGhen at (936)488-9034.

 

Joaquin Youth Sports will hold registration for the 2015 season of baseball/softball on the following days: Tuesday, February 3 from 5:30pm- 7:30pm at Word of Faith Gym; and Saturday, February 7 from 9am -12pm at Joaquin High School Gym Entrance (THIS WILL BE THE FINAL DAY AND TIME TO SIGN UP) Registration will be $80 per child or $150 per household. Please bring a copy of your child's birth certificate with you to registration.

 

There will be a Wild Game Cook-off and Banquet held on Saturday, February 7 at the Windham Civic Center. The event is sponsored by local churches, and is free. Tickets are available at the office of First Baptist Church in Center. The cook-off judging will begin at 5p.m., and participants may cook on site or off. The banquet will be at 6pm. The keynote speaker will be Bobby Brasher, noted outdoorsman, high school football coach and executive director of Christian Hunters and Anglers. The San Augustine Lions Sporting Clay Shoot will be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at Fairway Farm, located five miles east of San Augustine on Hwy. 21. All proceeds benefit Texas Lions’ Camp, local charities and scholarships. The shoot will consist of four or five person teams. Individuals are welcome and everyone will be placed on a team. There will be one flight beginning at 10 a.m., registration starts at 8 a.m. Fee is $100 per shooter. Food, drinks and prizes will be provided.
