Status hearing to be held for Bernie Tiede in Carthage Friday

The Panola Watchman newspaper reported Tuesday that Panola County Judicial Records are saying a status hearing for Bernie Tiede has been set for 1 p.m. Friday in Carthage.

The online article said the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals mandate recently issued formalized the Austin panel’s Nov. 26 ruling vacating the life sentence a jury handed Tiede in 1999 for the murder of Marjorie Nugent two years earlier.

The state’s highest criminal venue also agreed with the lower court that a new sentencing trial take place.

When his motion for a new punishment trial was granted in May, The 56-year old Tiede was freed on a $10,000 bond, with conditions he remain the guest of Austin filmmaker Richard Linklater.
