City of San Augustine Receives $150,000 Texas Capitol Fund Grant for downtown improvement

The City of San Augustine has received a $150,000 Texas Capitol Fund program award to provide funding for sidewalk improvements as well as administrative services.

Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples notified Mayor Leroy Hughes of the news recently.

The award addresses the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development’s national objective in eliminating existing slum and blight conditions in the City of San Augustine’s Main Street area.

City of San Augustine Main Street Director Tracy Cox said, “ We (The San Augustine Main Street Advisory Board and Design Special Committee) are truly excited about this project and look forward to the next step in making the project a reality.”

Ms. Cox said in order to apply a proposed project and street had to be chosen. After consulting with an engineer, plans were drawn up for a sidewalk improvement on Broadway Street, which will serve as a model for future projects.

The project was accepted by the San Augustine City Council and is expected to start mid-year 2015.
