Broaddus community turns out in support of school superintendent, concerns with possible termination

Citizens of the Broaddus community came out in force of support for Broaddus ISD Superintendent Shane McGown Tuesday night as the board of trustees was considering termination of the administrator.

The special meeting did not have an open forum to answer questions; therefore, the members were non-responsive to questions.

A petition started by parents has over 100 signatures to keep McGown. It's reported McGown has test scores up consistently.

Many parents were concerned about the cost to taxpayers if McGowen were to be terminated. According to their statements, McGowen’s contract was renewed six months prior to the meeting. The cost to the school district to terminate his contract would be $250,000, along with a $250,000 penalty.

San Augustine County Sheriff’s deputies also escorted several out for disturbing the meeting.

After more than two hours in closed session, the Broaddus ISD Board of Trustees took no action on the superintendent's position.
