Local Sports Round up 12/1/14; Tenaha to meet Iola for Region Final, Caraway becomes first Tiger to rush for over 2,000-yards in single season

The Tenaha Tigers are headed to their fourth-straight football regional final after a 47-7 win over Normangee in the Class 2A, Div. II Regional Semi-Final in Bullard last Friday night. Tenaha will now face Iola at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler. Iola advances with a 34-9 win over Chilton. The winner will advance to the state semi-final to take on the winner of the Region IV Final between (12-0) Bremond vs. (10-2) Bruni, Friday, 7:30pm, La Vernia.

 

Tiger running back Cobe Caraway became Tenaha’s first player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season, and most rushing yards in a game. The senior now has 2,054 yards for the year, after gaining 283 yards on 12 carries Friday.

 

In other third round action last weekend: Alto over Union Grove, 47-0; Centerville defeats Price Carlisle, 41-0, setting up a big showdown for the Class 2A, Div. I Region III Final.

In Class 3A, Div. II, Region III, Rogers over Crockett, 51-28 and Newton beats Franklin, 49-21, as the winners meet for the regional championship.

In Region II, Waskom beat Howe, 71-21, they’ll face Gunter in the region final.

In Class 4A, Div. I, Henderson beat Jasper, 60-43, and Navasota over El Campo, 54-36.

 

The Region Final has (11-2) Henderson vs. (13-0) Navasota, Saturday, 2:00pm, Abe Martin Stadium, Lufkin

 

Class 4A, Div. II, Gilmer got the best of Gladewater, 41-35, and Atlanta beat Tatum, 55-21, to set up the Region II Final.

The SFA Lumberjacks football season came to an end Saturday night as Northern Iowa takes a 44-10 win in the first round of the FCS Playoffs.

 

In basketball action, the Center Roughriders split a pair of games in the Burger King Classic played over the weekend at Whitehouse High School. The Riders lost to Jacksonville Friday, 79-64, but came back Saturday to take a 53-41 win over Lindale.

 

Lots of high school basketball scheduled for Tuesday, as the Center Riders go to Marshall for a 5 p.m. tip-off. Meanwhile, the Lady Riders will be in Tenaha to play the Lady Tigers at 5 p.m. Also, Mount Enterprise at San Augustine to play the Wolves in boys' and girls' action; Woodville comes to Shelbyville to take on the Dragons starting at 5 p.m. and the Lady Dragons are home against West Sabine beginning at 4:30. The Timpson Bears and Lady Bears will play Pineywoods Academy at Angelina College in Lufkin tipping-off at 6 p.m.; and the Joaquin Rams and Lady Rams will be at Douglass in a 4 p.m. start. In addition, Crockett will be in Garrison to play the Lady Bulldogs at 5, while the Garrison Bulldogs are scheduled to be at Alto. The Broaddus Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs go to Apple Springs.

 

The Center Middle School Basketball games scheduled for today, Monday, Dec. 1st against Carthage have had the following changes: Both Boys and Girls teams will travel to Carthage. The boys will play at the Carthage Middle School gym, and the girls will play at the Carthage High School gym.
