Former Shelby Regional Medical Center CFO pleads guilty to federal charges

The former chief financial officer of Shelby Regional Medical Center pleaded guilty to making false statements to federal violations in Tyler Federal Court on Wednesday.

Court records say 67-year old Joe White of Cameron oversaw the implementation of electronic health records for the hospital and was responsible for attesting to the meaningful use of those records in order to qualify to receive incentive payments, when Shelby Regional Medical Center did not meet the requirements. As a result, the hospital received over $785,000 from Medicare.

White was indicted by a federal grand jury in February. He faces up to five years in federal prison at sentencing, which has not been set.

White’s former boss and owner of Shelby Regional, Dr. Tariq Mahmood was found guilty in July, and will be sentenced early next year.
