Joaquin man escapes stalled equipment before it's struck by train

A Joaquin man escaped life-threatening injuries when the piece of heavy equipment he was operating became disabled on train tracks last Friday afternoon, and it was struck by a Union Pacific locomotive.

According to an article on ShelbyCountyToday.com, 67-year old Steve Cockrell was operating a CASE Track Hoe and was maneuvering in between private property over a private railroad crossing when it stopped operating on the tracks just before 1 p.m.

The report says Cockrell was able to escape and attempts were made to slow the train, but efforts failed, with the train striking the track hole sending it spinning off the tracks.

The train conductor, 39-year old James Adams, Jr. was taken by ACE EMC to ETMC Carthage for minor leg injury.

A long delay for the train resulted.

The incident was investigated by DPS Trooper Keith Jones.

There were no citations reportedly issued.
