Local Sports Roundup--11/7/14; Rider Tennis Team falls short at state tournament, high school football's regular season ends tonight

The Center Roughrider Tennis Team’s historic appearance in the UIL Team Tennis State Tournament ended in the semi-final round Thursday, as Abilene Wylie takes an 11-1 win in the 4A state semi-finals. The lone Center win came in boys’ doubles as Julian Jimenez & Dustin Bennett defeat Wylie, 7-6, 6-4. It’s reported the Riders played well, with several singles matches playing split sets. Abilene Wylie will take on Fredericksburg in this morning’s finals. Fredericksburg beat Wills Point, 10-2. Thursday’s semi-final action was delayed by rain until 10 a.m. Congratulations to the Riders and Coaches Leon Dykes and Beth Nichols on their record setting season.

 

There are several cross country runners from the area taking part in the UIL State Cross Country event in Round Rock Saturday. Center Roughriders Giovani Angel and Arnol Escobedo, along with Tenaha Tiger Carlos Bustamante, and seven members of the Shelbyville Lady Dragon Cross Country team, including Daisy Cartwright, Keanna Osby, Catasia Walker, Jakyra Ross, Ali Baty, Cayla Risinger, and Brittnie Risinger attempting to bring home the gold. This will be the fourth straight year for Shelbyville to qualify for the state cross country meet. Also participating is Mark Moreno of San Augustine, and seven cross country runners from Martinsville.

The only win by the Center Roughrider teams against Gladewater came by the Jr. High 7A team as they take a 26-22 victory. The 7B loses 12-0; 8th grade lost 36-0; and the Center Roughrider Freshmen/JV lost to Gladewater, 40-22.

 

Tonight's high school football action has the 2-6 Center Roughriders wrapping up their season at home against district leading and state-ranked 8-1 Gladewater. It's also the annual Pack the Place Pink game. Rob, Chris and the Rider Radio Team will have the action starting with the stadium pre-game show at 7 p.m. on KDET online and on 92.5 KXXE.

 

The undefeated 8-0 Shelbyville Dragons will be playing for the outright district championship as they go to 7-2 Pineland to play West Sabine, whose 3-1 in district. The title would also give Shelbyville a first-round bye in the playoffs.

 

The 7-1 Tenaha Tigers are also playoff bound and can take a district title when they finish the regular season at 4-5 Mount Enterprise; the 5-4 Joaquin Rams will be playing for a post-season berth as they take on 4-4 Beckville in Joaquin. The 3-5 Timpson Bears are also headed to the state playoffs and will be home to play winless Fruitvale tonight. Timpson will meet Evadale at 7:30 p.m. next Friday, Nov. 14 at Hemphill ISD Football complex. Timpson will be the home team. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 students.

 

Meanwhile, 4-5 San Augustine will conclude its season at home against 4-5 Cushing; and the 4-4 Garrison Bulldogs will apparently miss the playoffs for the first time in awhile when they go to 7-1 Corrigan. Logansport is home to take on Montgomery.

 

The Panola College Volleyball team will open play in the 2014 Region XIV (14) Tournament today at Lee College in Baytown. As the #2 seed in the north, and ranked No. 19 in the country, the Fillies (23-5) are set to square off in the first round against San Jacinto College (19-11), the #3 seed out of the south side of the conference. Eight teams have earned a spot to compete in this double-elimination format tournament that will decide which two teams move on to represent Region XIV at the National Tournament held in Casper, Wyoming later this month. Four teams in the field are ranked in the nation's top 20.

 

The Shelbyville Band Boosters will be selling “Shelbyville Dragon Rally Towels”. They will be at the Cafeteria this morning, November 7th, selling the towels and will be at the Pep Rally today and Friday selling the towels. They are $5 each.
