Local Sports Round-up 11/6/14; Rider Tennis begins play at state tournament this morning, Timpson sets playoff game

The Center Roughrider Tennis Team will be playing in the 2014 UIL Team Tennis State Tournament starting this morning at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the Texas A&M University campus. The Roughrider Tennis team will meet Abilene Wylie at 8 a.m. this morning in the 4A semifinals. The winner has the Wills Point-Fredericksburg winner in the 4A finals Friday. Center is 13-2 on the season, while Abilene Wylie is 18-3. We had mentioned earlier this week that this marks the first time in 42 years a sports team from Center High School has made it this far in state competition.

The Panola College Volleyball team is set to open play in the 2014 Region XIV (14) Tournament this weekend at Lee College in Baytown. As the #2 seed in the north, and ranked No. 19 in the country, the Fillies (23-5) are set to square off in the first round against San Jacinto College (19-11), the #3 seed out of the south side of the conference. Eight teams have earned a spot to compete in this double-elimination format tournament that will decide which two teams move on to represent Region XIV at the National Tournament held in Casper, Wyoming later this month. Four teams in the field are ranked in the nation's top 20.

It's the final week of sub-varsity football action tonight, and the schedule includes the Center Jr. High at home to play Gladewater beginning at 4:30 p.m., while the River Freshmen/JV go to Gladewater in a 5 p.m. start.

The Tenaha Tiger Jr. High is home to play Mt. Enterprise at 5 p.m.

The Joaquin Ram Jr. High and JV go to Beckville with a 5 p.m. kick-off.

The Timpson Jr. High will be on the road to Fruitvale today for a 5:30 p.m. start. The Timpson Jr. High Bears are undefeated on the season.

Friday night's high school football action has the Center Roughriders wrapping up their season at home against district leading and state-ranked Gladewater. It's also the annual Pack the Place Pink game. The undefeated Shelbyville Dragons will be playing for the outright district championship as they go to Pineland to play West Sabine; the Tenaha Tigers are also playoff bound and can take a district title when they finish the regular season at Mount Enterprise; the Joaquin Rams will be playing for a post-season berth as they take on Beckville in Joaquin. That's also our Shelby County Game of the Week on Q-100 KQBB. The Timpson Bears are also headed to the state playoffs and will be home to play Fruitvale Friday night. Meanwhile, San Augustine will conclude its season at home against Cushing; and the Garrison Bulldogs will apparently miss the playoffs for the first time in awhile when they go to Corrigan. Logansport is home to take on Montgomery.

One Shelby County playoff-bound football team has already set its bi-district game, as the Timpson Bears will meet Evadale at 7:30 p.m. next Friday, Nov. 14 at Hemphill ISD Football complex. Timpson will be the home team. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 students.

The Shelbyville Band Boosters will be selling “Shelbyville Dragon Rally Towels”. They will be at the Cafeteria Friday morning, November 7th, selling the towels and will be at the Pep Rally today and Friday selling the towels. They are $5 each. You're asked to support the Dragons and bring your rally towel to the games!
