The Center Roughrider Tennis Team is headed to the state tournament after dominating the regional event last Friday & Saturday in Willis. Some 20 Center tennis players will be making the trip to state. The team has been ranked No. 4 in the state most of the year. It marks the best showing by a Center team sport to make it to a state championship event since 1973.
The Center Lady Rider Varsity Volleyball team will play a Bi-District Championship match at 6:30 p.m. tonight in Carthage. The winner has the winner of the Fairfield/Gatesville match in the area round later this week. Also, the San Augustine Lady Wolves are playing Hull-Daisetta in a Bi-District Championship match.
In last Friday night’s football, the Center Roughriders will miss the state playoffs after Texarkana Pleasant Grove fought back to take a 45-42 win. The Riders will wrap-up the season at home Friday at home against front-runner Gladewater.
The Shelbyville Dragons win a thriller against San Augustine, as a missed try on a two-point conversion spilled doom for the Wolves, as Shelbyville takes a 21-20 win to remain unbeaten, clinching a playoff berth and a share of the district championship. The Dragons go to West Sabine this week with the outright title on the line.
San Augustine had their playoff hopes dashed with the setback. The Wolves will host Cushing Friday.
The Joaquin Rams take a 46-6 win over Cushing, and need only to beat Beckville at Ram Stadium this week to take the last playoff spot.
The Timpson Bears also punched their ticket into the state playoffs Friday night with a 47-30 win over Maud. Timpson will be home this week to finish out with Fruitvale. The Tenaha Tigers are also playoff bound staving off a scrappy ball control Overton team, 34-24 Saturday. The Tigers will officially have the district championship Friday night with a win at Mount Enterprise.
The Garrison Bulldogs lose to Newton, 39-6, and must beat Corrigan-Camden Friday and have Crockett lose to Deweyville to have a chance at post-season. Also, Logansport beats Northwood-Lena, 39-0.
The SFA Football Lumberjacks have a tough time against rival Sam Houston State, losing to the Bearkats, 42-28.
