ID needed for record number of Texans registered to vote

With the election now just days away, folks across Texas are being urged to get out and vote next Tuesday and they're being reminded that they will need the proper identification. After numerous twists and turns in the legal battle over the need for a photo I-D, the U-S Supreme Court ruled last week that the requirement will stand this election. Albert Morales is with the Advocacy Alliance Center of Texas.

"They have to present a valid Texas ID. Different forms of ID are acceptable: a Texas concealed handgun license, also a military issued ID and a U-S passport also will work with that."

Voters can also present a state-issued driver's license, personal identification card or election identification certificate, or a U-S citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph.

There are a record number of Texans registered to vote this year: over 14-million. But Morales says with the voter turnout rate in the state usually among the worst in the nation, work continues to get more people to the polls.

"We're hosting phone banks in order to call people and remind them in a non-partisan way to get out to vote. We're providing them with information as far as their nearest polling location and the hours that the polls are open."

In the 2012 election, only half of eligible voters in the state turned out to cast a ballot, and in 2010 it was only one in three.

You can vote early through Friday for all Shelby County elections, statewide, county, city of Center and Center ISD elections at the county clerk’s office on the Center square. You can cast your ballot from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today thru Friday.

Early voting for all elections in San Augustine County is taking place at Election Administrator Deborah Woods' office, and at the Broaddus Community Center. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today thru Friday at the elections office, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Broaddus at the community center.
