Local Sports Round up 10/17/14; high school football enters Week 2 of district

In sub-varsity football last night, the Center Roughrider 9th/JV were handed their first loss of the season, as Tatum came away with a 35-6 win. In Jr. action, the 7B tied Tatum, 3-3, 7A defeats Tatum, 36-12, and the 8A Roughriders were shutout, 48-0.

 

It’s Week 2 of district play for local teams tonight. The 2-3 Center Roughriders will head to 2-4 Tatum. Both teams are looking for their first win in Dist. 6-4A, Div. II. Heading into play tonight, Atlanta, Gladewater and Spring Hill are all 1-0, with Center, Tatum and Texarkana Pleasant Grove 0-1.

 

Gladewater heads to Atlanta for one of the top games in East Texas tonight, and Spring Hill goes to Pleasant Grove.

 

In the Shelby County Game of the Week, 4-2 West Sabine will be at the 3-2 Joaquin Rams, as the first Dist. 10-2A, Div. I win is on the line for both teams. It's also homecoming for the Rams. Don Wall has the play-by-play on Q100 KQBB and online at cbc-radio.com beginning at 7:20.

 

Elsewhere in the district, the 5-0 Shelbyville Dragons will head to 4-2 Cushing and 3-3 San Augustine is at 4-1 Beckville.

 

Looking at the district race, Shelbyville, Beckville and San Augustine are all 1-0, with Joaquin, Cushing and West Sabine 0-1.

 

In Dist. 11-2A, Div. II, 0-6 Fruitvale at 4-1 Tenaha, it's 1-4 Timpson at 3-3 Overton, 3-3 and 3-3 Mount Enterprise at 2-4 Maud.

 

The district race has Tenaha, Timpson and Overton at 1-0, with Mount Enterprise, Maud and Fruitvale 0-1.

 

In Dist. 11-3A, Div. II, 1-5 Deweyville is at 3-2 Garrison, where it's homecoming.  Corrigan-Camden will be at Hemphill and Crockett goes to Newton.

 

Garrison, Corrigan-Camden and Newton are 1-0.

 

The 5-1 Logansport Tigers go to Block tonight.

 

Other area games, Kilgore at Carthage, Nacogdoches at Jacksonville, Lufkin at Lindale, Browsboro at Henderson, and Alto at Grapeland.

 

The SFA Lumberjacks go to Houston Baptist for a 7 p.m. kick-off Saturday.

 

The Shelbyville Youth Football League is hosting Saturday's flag and tackle youth football games. Volunteers are needed to help at the gate with collecting entry fees and volunteers are needed to work the concessions tent. The Concessions tent will be open from 10:00am until 3 or 4pm. The gate will need volunteers starting at 8am since games start at 9am. Parents able to volunteer, contact Johnny Fleming at 936-590-4526.
