Panola County coal mine to be closed at end of 2015, no job loss expected

Word out of Panola County is that a coal mine field is playing out.

According to an article in The Panola Watchman newspaper this week, the coal mine field outside Beckville is scheduled for closure next year after supplying fuel for power plants in the area since the 1970s.

The operator of the Martin Lake plant in Rusk County, Luminant, said the Beckville Mine’s natural lifespan is ending and productive mining will be complete at the end of 2015.

A company spokesperson said in the story that 90 or so employees will be moved to other mines feeding the Martin Lake plant. Those mines are near Liberty, Oak Hill and Tatum.

No job losses are expected.
